Sign and Trade Rules

Post#1 » by LLcoleJ » Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:20 am

For the CBA heads out there, would you help me clarify the S&T rules? Specifically, when a player get's signed and traded to a team. IIRC there is a rule that he cannot be packaged with other players and any other players being sent out would be a separate deal?

Is this correct?

Thanks

So just flat out NO or is there any more to this?

I am talking specifically about the team signing a player and trading him adding more players in the deal. Not about the teams sending the package back.

No

This is a common misconception and I'm not sure what its source is. But as an example, when Chicago traded Eddy Curry to New York, there were under-contract players being combined with S&Ts on both sides, IIRC.

Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins for Grant Hill featured a double sign and trade, too. Keith Van Horn's inclusion in the Kidd trade. Aaron McKie in the Pau one. Happens a lot. There's still this misconception, however. Strange times.

Hell No !!!!

Was that the "any more" you were seeking?

:-)

PS - Sham and loserx are exactly right. The "rule" you seek doesn't exist, it's existence a myth having arisen for unknown reasons.

You know, we really should all go on a picnic or something. I'll bring the swingball set.

There's a addendum to the Uniform Player Contract. Basically the player negotiates that deal with the new team, and signs the contract with the team that owns their rights. The addendum states that if the player is not traded to the listed team within 48 (or 24?) hours, the contract is void.

I am immediately reminded of the "Sam Peckinpah's 'Salad Days'" sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

I am subsequently reminded that I am a colossal nerd.

This is somehow thought to be relevant to the discussion? I don't follow the train of thought (if any).

The rule had been stated but I thought it might help clarify the answer if the OP knew more of the legal form of the transaction.

My sincerest apologies for the digression from the beer-laden swingball picnic activities. Carry on.

Wow, great clarification of those rules. Always thought it was like the original post thought too. Shouldn't a global moderator know these rules? Strange.
