Was Larry Sanders Kahn/Rambis/Ronzone's Target at 16?

Post#1 » by Dan's with the Wolves » Sat Jun 26, 2010 4:09 pm

Kahn said that there was only one player that they liked better than Webster at 16 and when he was gone they pulled the trigger on Webster.

Both Draft Express and NBADraft.net has Larry Sanders at 16 to the Wolves. He is young athletic big man.

Was he the one Kahn was referring to?

I'm guessing it was Paul George

Agree on it probably being George.

He didn't say at 16. He said "in that area of the draft."

Agreed. I think it was pretty evident we didn't have much interest in drafting a big man unless his name was Favors. Passing up on Whiteside at 30 makes that kind of obvious to me.

I think it may very well have been Xavier Henry just as easily as it might have been Paul George. I have my doubts that they really believed that Paul George was going to ever fall to them.

Deep down I think they knew George was a long shot to make it to #16, and i'm sure they made some calls to see what it would take to move up in the 11-12 range. I think everyone was a little surprised he went to Indiana at 10.

I could see Henry being a mention, too.

Whatever, I'm fine with Webster.

Yeah, I'm guessing we were going to get #11 + Mo Pete if George was still there.

I just found it rather interesting that both DX and NBADraft.net had Sanders going to the Wolves at 16.

I know they were pretty high on George and wanted to trade up to get him. He did address that the opportunities to move up evaporated.

I'm not so sure he meant trading up when he said there was only one player they liked better than Webster in that range.

Don't both DX and NBADraft.net get most of there info from agents. It would seem that the agents thought Sanders was going 16 to the Wolves.

I'm pretty sure it had been leaked days before the draft that Sanders got a promise from Milwaukee

I guess DX and NBADraft.net didn't get or believe the leak.

Ford updated his draft to put Sanders at 15 to Milw. a couple hours before the draft. Apparently he got the memo really late too.

Sanders is a stellar pick for Milw. A lot of teams are going to kick themselves they passed on him - ala Jennings.
Khris Middleton - Beating up on Trash Can Teams since 1943. Invisible Man status otherwise.

Considering Martell got called after pick #12 by his agent and was told he might be getting traded, pretty obvious it wasn't sanders...

Either Henry or George then. Probably Henry because he would've fit better with Johnson than George.

George makes more sense. More athletic.

Re: George not fitting with Johnson as well as Henry:

Actually, many observers--including the player himself--think George will end up a 2.

Besides, it's pretty obvious that Rambis/Kahn are adding versatile, athletic wings and not guys who need to be pigeonholed into the 2 or the 3. Johnson can play off-guard as well as small forward and George can, too.

This brings up an interesting question that might deserve its own thread eventually but seems to fit here now, in a discussion of Paul George, who was drafted by Indiana:

Does Larry Bird have it out for David Kahn?

There have been rumblings of tensions between the guys--the public pissiness over who offered what and when in the purported Flynn-for-10th trade; the rumors that Bird has been bad-mouthing the condition of Jefferson's knee; etc.

Might Bird be resentful toward Kahn and the Wolves for their treatment of his buddy Kevin McHale, and bent on wreaking whatever revenge he can?

And if so, did Bird draft George to mess with the Wolves, knowing how much they coveted him? (Not just to spite MIN, of course, but to pressure a trade on IND's terms.)

Someone mentioned in another thread how it seems that MEM and IND seem reluctant to trade with us. Might the same situation apply to Chris Wallace, who was/is good pals with McHale as well?

Just random speculation.
