NBA free-agency... what's happening right now

Post#1 » by heathmalc » Thu Jul 1, 2010 2:35 am

I thought this would be a good thread for us Cavaliers fans to have, to keep track of other movements happening across the league. As we all know, one or two moves by one team, can severely change the plans of another.

Adrian Wojnarowski WojYahooNBA

With way that Hawks are coming for Joe Johnson, that'll be over fast. Knicks are in real, real free agent trouble. Amar'e is lukewarm on NY.

Dwyane Wade told two associates in past 24 hours that his focus is on recruiting a big man (Bosh, Amar'e, Boozer) to Miami now, not LeBron.

@TrueHoop Just struck me: Free agency 2010 will be the NBA's definitive Twitter event. People not on Twitter will have a tough time keeping up

Thanks Heath. I was actually about to come here and tell you that I think you need to have a thread about the general going-ons currently.

You better update this as much as possible. Otherwise, I will be thoroughly disappointed. (And I have a sig waiting for that if I am. :) )

Rumor going around that a S&T has been made (completed) with Toronto, by Miami... yet, Riley is scheduled to go see Amare...so either Riley cancels, or this rumor is prolly just poo on the wall.

I am not John... (although I did teach one of his classes).

John Krolic is the Cavs truehoops Blog writer on ESPN, and does the live chats on Dailydime live.

John is an EXTREMELY talented writer (a lot more than I) yet he is only 22. And, he is as legit as they come. NO BS here! Ask Andy K if you want a reference for Krolic..or ask Thorpe, who is an admirer.

The first shoe to drop in 2010 free agency had nothing and everything to do with LeBron James. With the Hawks expressing their willingness to retain Joe Johnson with a six-year max deal in the $120 million range, the landscape of free agency changed dramatically before it even began.

Johnson’s intentions have been difficult to read, with sources indicating that he’s been intent on hearing what other teams have to say before deciding whether to return to Atlanta. But the additional $25-plus million that Atlanta can offer him, with bigger raises and a sixth year, is expected to speak volumes in his decision. It would be a huge commitment on the Hawks’ part, one that would price Johnson’s many suitors out of the market.

It’s feasible that the max offer could simply be parlayed into a sign-and-trade arrangement, with Johnson going to the Knicks or Clippers, believed to be his two most likely destinations if he were to leave the Hawks. But if that’s the case, why would Atlanta show its cards this early? If they were preparing for Johnson to leave, they’d wait for him to bring offers to them and then react. Not the case here.

If Johnson stays, the options for teams in pursuit of LeBron are diminished exponentially. A wild card for the Knicks would be to sell LeBron on coming to New York and letting him recruit Johnson to join him. But short of landing LeBron, the Knicks’ chances of landing Johnson with a five-year deal – the most they could offer – would be close to zero. Not only would Johnson be insane to leave that much money on the table at this stage of his career – he’d be 34 in the sixth year of the Hawks’ deal – but his personality is such that he wouldn’t want to be the consolation prize for LeBron in New York. Being a franchise player has never been Johnson’s desire or strong suit, much less in the glare of New York.

STEIN_LINE_HQ

Just heard my man @chris_broussard on ESPNews, saying LeBron spent Free Agency Eve playing softball w/buddies tonight in Akron. At short

I guess this could be viewed as a good sign... of course we're all "searching" for anything positive, so it can be viewed however you want... I'm gonna view it as an omen that I have won the powerball lottery.

From everything I hear, LeBron has absolutely not made up his mind yet. Pitches over next 2-3 days important. This will take some time.
