You guys are honestly excited over Darko?

The price is right the length not so much.

I would've liked to gamble two years on him for 5 mil/year. Hopefully, there's at least a team option included. Anyway, if they see him as starter material and doesn't screw things up he'll likely be worth that contract. 5 mil isn't much for a C.

4th year is partially guaranteed according to Chad Ford's twitter

A team option would've been better but I'll take that one.

I'm very surprised Darko signed for 4 years, he really must be convinced he has a future here.
5 million is a bargain for a starting C. Even if he only plays 25 MPG that is a good deal.

To answer the option questions, there can be no option in the first 3 years of the deal, since player and team options can only be the last year of the deal and ETO's can occur no sooner than year 4. Since the last year is partially unguaranteed, I think it is highly, highly unlikely there is an option in the 4th year either. (see question 50 in larry coon FAQ)

Darko might not blow people away in metric stats (TS%, Rebound Rate), but watching the games closely the guy was just phenomenal when it came to playing a team game. He was excellent at hedging the picknroll, rebounded his area consistently and defended the paint without overcommitting to block shots, moved the ball on offense and knew how to position himself to create driving lanes for his teammates. None of those things show up on the stat sheet, but they are very important when it comes to winning games. Yeah our record was bad with him, but that had more to do with a brutal schedule and attitude/talent/chemistry issues than the way Darko played. I'm optimistic that he arrives in better shape with a more plished offensive game. That lefty baby hook is deadly if he can knock it down a little more consistently. 14-9-2.5 is a nice target for him.

Al/Love/Darko/Pek is a nice luxury to have, but either one of those guys (likely Pek) will be riding the pine or the other 3 are going to be upset with their PT.

David Lee makes no sense, he is worse defensively than Al. If we can't move Al for a shot-creating SG (monta ellis, Iguodala), I say keep him and see what we can get for Pekovic from a team that strikes out in FA. Paul George signed his rookie deal, so any chance of a 3-way Jefferson deal involving him is out the window.

Maybe Pek for the Knicks 2012 pick from Houston, it could be pretty valuable should NY strike out in FA. Whatever we do with Pek, it will have to be before July 15, which is Pek's deadline to opt-out of his euro deal.

Ford has Pek starting at 4 mil. We would be using the MLE on him (since we lose it if we use our raw cap space anyways) and Darko's bird rights to sign him. This allows us to keep bird rights on the rest of our rights-held players (spree, wilkins, sasha, etc) and our small trade exceptions.

If Darko has an escalating deal, I have his first-year salary at 4,319,656.
I think 5 mil each year makes more sense though from darko's perspective.

If his salary is 5 million, I have our cap space at 3,734,408.
If it is an escalating deal, I have our cap space at 4,414,754.
We can create another 762,195 by cutting Stiemsma.
So Ford is correct when he pegs our cap space at around 5 million.

The best use at this point, in my opinion, is using the rest of our space to take a contract plus an asset (future draft pick). Take humphries or beasley plus a pick for example.
Dumping Al to overpay david lee would be mind-numbingly dumb in my opinion.

PTI graded the Darko signing. Kornheiser gave it a C-, Wilbon gave it a D-.

Darko;
$4,350,000 $4,806,750 $5,263,500 $5,720,250

Peko;
$4,000,000 $4,320,000 $4,640,000

Commited minus steimsma
44,060,000

Wes;
3,105,500 x 1.2 = 3,726,600
Lazar
850,000
Rubio
2,724,300

Assuming the likely rookie deals (20% over for Wes), dropping stiemsma, and the rubio hold.
We are at 51,361,000 million. If the cap is 56,065,000, which won't be known until the 7th, we have 4.7 million available.

Al makes 13,000,000
So without Al, 17.7 million...

I see you are getting that from this excellent source:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... SXc&gid=19

I don't no whether his Darko/Pek info is sourced or just speculation.
Those salaries for Darko add up to 20,140,500
and Pekovic adds up to 12,960,000.
There may be buyout/signing bonuses that skew the numbers slightly.
He has Rubio's cap hold wrong, he has the salary for the 5th pick using the 2009 rookie scale,
it is 2,812,200 (the 2010 rookie scale).

Zgoda just said the guaranteed money for Darko is 16 million total.
That could be 5-5-5-1 or
$4,350,000 $4,806,750 $5,263,500 $1,579,750

Funny, but true. At least in regards to knowledge. Sometimes entertaining, but isn't watchable for actual analysis or insight.

Because an Amare or Bosh isn't interested in signing with the Wolves.

I like Darko & wanted him back but I'm a little surprised by the amount he got & the length of the deal. The Wolves hedged the Darko bet with Pekovic a bit but they are really in a position where they need to be right about these two. Passing on Cousins & dealing Al in favor of Darko, Pekovic, & increased minutes for Love (or perhaps a FA like Lee) is a gamble.

Looking at this list I have a very hard time saying we are overpaying at all.
It could really backfire should Darko have an attitude issue, but the risk is lower considering it's only 3 years plus a small guarantee for a 4th.

Darko's signing was voted worst of the FA period so far by Chad Ford's tweeps. Even worse than Gooden's deal.

Basically this is because 75% of people that follow Chad Ford's twitter form their opinions solely based on what Bill Smmons says.

Amir Johnson just got 5 years and $34M. Colangelo does it again!!! Holy smokes. I'll take Darko and Pekovic over Johnson.

So how exactly is Darko a rip off for us? Seems like we got a great deal on both Darko and Pekovic.

Because any deal that the Wolves make will be panned.
