Yao will not opt out

Sorry Yao-haters! The Big Fella isn't going anywhere!

I think 99% of us expected this; but I know that some wanted him to opt out for whatever reasons. Not happening!

I dont think there is a Yao Ming hater. He is a good guy, great player and he always does the right thin and say the right words.

Great for you Houston that he will be with you.
I think he will play in Houston the rest of his career.

It's 100% dependent on how he plays this upcoming season.

I just want to know if this news will get the Chinese chron.com commenters to shut up. It's an epidemic on Feigen's blog. They all think Yao's underpaid (even though he's making the most he can possibly be making, per the CBA) and that Les/Morey are colluding in some nefarious plot to ruin their beloved Yao.

P.S. - Patrick Patterson is a legit Twitter guy. He's on that thing like Oprah on a baked ham.

It was my understanding that Yao had a player option. He could have opted out if he wanted to. It just does not make financial sense to opt out and risk 17-18 million after an injury. I'm sure the Rox will offer him an extension if he manages to play a full season this year.

I do not know how much money Les makes off Yao Ming via China, what I do know is the Rocket's have been more than fair to Yao.

2 of those team (Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Miami) will be out of luck
they will throw the max dollars at Yao
Yao may not be top 10 in NBA
but he's popular
he will bring revenue to your team

How can you say that the Rockets have been "more than fair" to Yao when you freely admit that you don't know how much money they made off of him? I'm willing to bet that the revenues the Rockets get from the Chinese market is way, way more than Yao's actual salary. Yao's real value extends beyond what he can bring on the basketball court.

Even though Yao is coming off a serious injury, I don't doubt he would've commanded a maximum salary in the market today. Teams may hesitate from handing him a guaranteed 5-year contract, but I'm sure there are more than a few who would've offered him a contract with a team option after the 3rd year or somesuch. Regardless, it would've been more lucrative than him sitting on a 1-year contract on a risky come-back season.

Yao's decision to not opt out was nothing but an act of loyalty to the Rockets franchise. From a financial perspective, it was quite foolish. If his comeback attempt fails, then he risks losing tens of millions of dollars he coulda made on a contract extension today.

Well then, to begin with your own words...

How can you say that the Rockets have been "more than fair" to Yao when you freely admit that you don't know... what is "fair", what is "foolish", or what is "loyal"? Because unless you're a collective bargaining/labor relations expert, your slip and your biases are showing.
