just1bullet - I have been a Bullets/Wizards fan forever, I had a Jeff Ruland poster on my wall growing up, you know the one where he is crushing the basketball with his hands. The name comes from my visits to the Cap center with my Father in the late 80s early 90s and feeling like I was the only Bullet fan in the stands, Knicks games were the worst!

2 kids; 8 and 4

I run the Whole Foods Market in Jenkintown PA, Moved to Philly 3 years ago lived in Old Town for 18 years prior to that. Plus a 3 year stint in the early 80s. Military Brat, so I moved every 2/3 years and the first team I loved was the 83 Bullets! We moved to Indiana in 85 and we would go see the Bullets when they came into town to play the Pacers.

Saddest day as a Wizard/Bullets fan- The day they changed their name to Wizards, or even sadder was the Day Howard signed with the Heat. I remember walking around with a walkman, listening to fuzzy wtem 980. They changed all their programming to talk about Howard going to the Heat.

This is the only board I belong to for anything. As you can see I never really post but I read this board about every day right after Washington Post.com and ESPN.

Greendale -- Named for my most likely location. Greendale Golf Course -- a Fairfax County muni located south of Alexandria on Telegraph Road.

As personal as I'm going to get -- 60, Married, 2 Kids (29 and 33) and four grandkids (2,5,7,11). Born in Alexandria, raised in Del Ray, spent nine years of married life in Alexandria and the last 30 years in Franconia. When I do work, I'm a mathematician (the business card says senior mathematician but that's a little too pretentious for this audience) working for one of the greatest defense contractors. Spent 25 or so years defending the US Navy from the Soviet threat and the last five defending the US Navy from the environmentalists. Spend most of my time now either playing golf or filling in as a substitute starter at Greendale.

Bullets Fan history -- We play baseball as kids, every chance we got. I may not have even touched a basketball until I was in high school. A buddy got me to go to a HS game when I was a frosh or soph and I instantly fell in love with the games. It helped that the school had a great team (including a kid that ended up as a first-round pick (perhaps even the first pick) in the old ABA. When the HS games were not enough, I started looking elsewhere and stumbled across the golden voice of Jim Karvellas. Bullseye. The Bullets had arrived in Baltimore just in time to satisfy my thirst.

I was a Kevin Loughery fan (an acquired taste) in those days. The first two or three years were disappointing or at least I thought they were disappointing until the bottom fell. But by that time I was off at school and the Bullets may as well have been playing on the moon as there was no radio or TV coverage. Indeed the first time I can remember seeing the Bullets play was a pre-season game in 1966 or 67. They were awful. God awful. But fortunately out of sight. By the time I returned to radio range of the games they had turned the corner and were facing the Bucks in the championshp. Although that loss was not unexpected, the string of playoff losses to the Knicks and then the loss to Golden State in 1975 were harder to swallow. As someone has already mentioned, the playoff series against the Knicks in the early 70's were the best part of Bullets history. The championship and the following season were great but the drama of the playoff series against the Knicks could not be eclipsed.

I've been inactive the last couple of years for a couple of reasons, not the least of which was the difficult times the Wizards have had. Perhaps this year will be different.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born unto you; he is Christ the Lord.

What does that have to do with anything? Plenty of people who don't like the United States live here - many of whom even "serve" in elected office... ;-)

That's my goal--spend years overseas, come back on a white horse and gain political office, then replace America's ineffective policies with the most ineffective policies the rest of the world has to offer.

Seriously though, I'll probably end up in the D.C. area in a couple years if I join the foreign service, and I think I'll really need that to reconnect with friends and family. But for now I feel like the skills and experiences I can only get from living overseas outweigh those I can only get living in the states. Particularly here in Asia, where the number of Americans with language, culture, business and other skills is going to trail way behind demand for the foreseeable future. And then there's my addiction to foreign languages...

What I would really like in a few years is to see if I could join the NBA's effort to spread basketball in China. That would be a dream job and if it doesn't exist I'll have to try to schedule a meeting with Stern in a few years to whip him into shape...

I worked at Greendale for a year in 91'. Great job! I grew up playing the course, love it!

CCJ Appreciation Thread

Post#85 » by w dumseld » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:01 am

I'm a long suffering bullets fan and check the boards here almost every day. I never post because I live in Asia now and never see the games, so have nothing of value I could add. My marriage probably couldn't take it either. But I greatly appreciate all of the ideas, information and passion that goes into the debate and discourse on this board. My Bullets pedigree is that I grew up in DC, actually went to games in the late 70s and was at many playoff and even championship games often holding up a poster with a big E written on it. I remember them saying that Greg Ballard was going to be the new Wes Unseld, but with an 18 foot jumper, and its been down hill ever since. :-? Much as I want to or try, I can't quit the Bullets/Wizards. Every summer street and Smith's would come out with an NBA season preview edition and every summer I would convince myself that somehow Jeff Ruland, Jay Vincent, Muggsy Bogues, Kenny Green, John Williams, Moses, Bernanrd, Michael Adams redux, Rex Chapman, Pervis ELlison, Harvey Grant, Googs, Mark Price, Webber, Rasheed, MJ, KFB, Rip Hamilton, Stackhouse etc. would lead us to the promised land. And every year that hope would get dashed upon the rocks of NBA reality. I spent countless hours daydreaming about what a front line of Webber, Rasheed and Ben Walace could do, but I think Wes brought us so much happiness in the 70s, that the universe had to balance it out over the next two decades. Anyway, just want to say how strange it is to find a forum where people as illogically and unrewardingly bleed for the Wiz as I do.

So a shout out to CCJ. If Nate is the brain of the board and every else that posts (especially if you read now in the summer) the heart of the board, then I would say that CCJ is the soul of the board. When AB had his unfortunate discretion and everyone mocked and put him down, perhaps because it made them feel better, CCJ brought some New Testament to the board and asked who else hadn't done stupid stuff in their youth. Who really had the right to cast stones. Any of us at 20 years old with that kind of money and lifestyle could have made similarly stupid mistakes and lord knows many of us did. I'd say it was a great representation of compassion and I learned a lot from CCJ then. Also when he goes on about DuJuan Blair etc., I feel his pain. I'm on the tall and skinny side and balled most of my life until kids came along. But when i was playing pick-up ball if I was choosing, I would ALWAYS pick the thickest dude first. Maybe its because we generally played straight up in half court games in DC, but someone that would bang under the basket are hugely important. Big guys like that clear space when you attack the basket, they rebound on both ends, and they punish the other teams big men. I generally play around the 4 or 5 and just hate bouncing off some short but strong fella. I just don't understand the resistance CCJ gets on this point. Maybe growing up watching Wes instilled it. CCJ has persistently argued for playing our big men together and I would be seething in anger when "watching" the games on ESPN see Jordumb go small ball and blow game after game. Absolutely furious. Probably anger at other injustices and stupidity I've suffered from in my life and projected onto Jordumb, but all the same, the help in getting over that anger was huge from reading CCJ's posts on how stupid small ball was. Imagine Brendan or Javale playing with a legit enforcer type PF... And when Gilbert resigned at the crazy contract CCJ gave his honest emotional response. Anger. Don't get me wrong. I love Gil and how he's made the Wiz relevant again. I love how he wins games at the end and works works works on his own game. I wished he played some real D and played the point a bit more like Isiah (focussing on assists for the first 3 quarters), but I truly appreciate the Gil chose the Wiz. I think CCJ understood in his mind that they had to sign Gil, but in his heart he was angry. With the surgery done at Sibley and not by some super specialist and Gil's ridiculous first rehab, I think we all could see where Chocolate City was coming from. It may not have been completely logical, but it felt good to see someone else be so honest about that reaction.

So just a message of appreciation to let CCJ know that he has fans out their that find sustenance in his message and hope he keeps it up.

wow read the last six pages of this thread and now I have everyones deal jumbled up.

Name: Bruce last name begins with O ( as do every male in my tribe) I was uncreative and just happy to join because i'd been lurking since forever. I think Doc is responsible for my coming here. Used to post on the wizards website and saw his name and asked him if he's the same guy as the one on this site. he got me in. Maybe he doesn't realize but thanks. You are responsible for many wasted hours of speculating.

Background: Actually Kenyan so I could theoretically outlast everyone of you in a race. I grew up in Kenya and my uncles used to introduce me to different games. One taught me to box, another karate, another taught me basketball and to play chess. Incidentally when i used to play chess at dupont I've become miles better than him. Just like I became miles better at basketball. Forgot to add single, but I mingle. No kids yet, but supposedly I'd make a great dad. Maybe they are unaware of how much basketball I'll play with the kids.

Occupation: Currently moved back to kenya and finishing my commercial pilot license so I should be working soon in that field, and hopefully that brings me back to dc where i have family. So right now i just fly around and study.

Basketball and the wizards: The first time I played basketball I was so small I was probably five. I couldn't throw the ball high enough to get to the rim. Had to shoot by forcing the ball up from my diaphragm like i was hoising a stone. While simultaneously kicking outwards to the side. I fell in love with it, i'd dribble the ball everywhere. Played or every team along the way. I'm six foot so it begun at small forward, I played shooting guard after being inspired by the fact allen iverson was my size and height ( not anymore I'm now 220) and i was facing bigger competition. My last position played was point guard. But i really was more of a shooting guard.

I moved to dc to visit my sister. unfortunately in the past I had not been able to watch many games as i wante. They idn't get to show bullet games in kenya back in the day so I was more into the bulls. My favourite player funny enoug was rodman. I like his rebounding and his defense. I saw myself as that. Later I became super aggresive offensively to catch up to my colleages. Anyway I came to dc in 2003 and lived there til end of 2009. My first awarenes of he team was wth gilbert arenas. I've been in love with the team since. I keepsaying if had money I'd buy them. If i could work for them I would as well. I just love the team. I mean I love basketball and played it all my life, and this is the team I love so that tells you how much I love them. I missed out on the team sucking and the old schoolplayers but when I commited to the wizards, I commited. Upto a point I post on here and try and get all details despite living in kenya.

i have read realgm for years and joined after being constantly disappointed in epsn's forums. sometimes at work i spend more time reading this site than actually doing work.

my father was a huge basketball fan, so growing up i spent alot of time listening to him talk about the all time greats. i really started following it around the end of the jhoward days and since then have been a die hard fan. i only missed 3 games last season and usually try to get to the VC around 15+ times a year. my favorite player is still gilbert arenas although i really miss the days of old tmac.

my favorite memories are gilberts last second shot in game 5 over hinrich, gilberts 60 point game in la, and gilberts game winner against utah which i was there for.

believe it or not, i kinda miss the days of chris whitney knockin down threes and jahadi white grabbin boards.
i try to get into football every year but usually end up arguing with my friends about how basketball is better.

o ya i hate lebron james... a lot

name: gilbertgoes05- because I was young and stupid and uncreative when I joined 5 years ago. Actual name is Ben.

19 years old, going to college in the great state of Iowa, and I'm still a fan of Gilbert. Haven't been on the boards for most of last season because it was too depressing.... but I'm back now and don't plan on leaving any time soon- unless of course we somehow get LeBron because I would find a new team to root for. That's how much I don't like LeBron.

Why I'm a wizards fan from IOWA: Well, my dad was a Baltimore Bullets fan because they were the good team then and the only team on TV apparently. I was brainwashed as a kid to be a bullets fan and now wizards fan. When I was a baby my mom bought me a Michael Jordan Bulls jersey and my dad wouldn't let me see it. He did a good job of turning me into a Wizards fan. A few years later I got a Chris Webber jersey and I've been a wizards fan for my whole life. Really only fully started following after Kwame was drafted- of course I was only 10 years old.

That's me in a nutshell

Name: sfam - used to stand for "Scifi-ActionMan" when I hung out on RottenTomatoes.com. I have a hard time remembering lots of different usernames so I sort of boil them down to a few. I'm also skinsfanno9 on extremeskins.

Age: 43

My deal: Married, with two kids (12 yr old daughter and a 17 yr old son that somehow loves Lebron James - yes I've failed here, but at least he likes the Redskins). I'm an independent consultant working on various social software efforts for a number of Federal government agencies. I also carve pumpkins, like insanely (http://www.fantasypumpkins.com) and occaisionally watermelons (search watermelon death star if interested - you should find one as recent as last week from a place called "foocamp")

Wiz Fan Creds: We moved to DC from Ann Arbor in '76, which coincided when I first started getting into sports (I had just started getting into watching the Lions before we moved). I remember very well the two championship contests with the SuperSonics in '77 and '78, probably because my father actually took us to a Bullets game that year (that's a big deal for a 10 yr old kid). I also ran into Wes Unseld outside the Baltimore Aquarium soon after he retired (he was surrounded by kids - looked huge), which got me even more excited to watch. I'd put myself as a bigger Redskins fan (which most who lived through the 80s probably were), but I've loved the resurgence of the team in the last decade compared to the previous two. I think Ted is perfect for the job and excited to see where they go. I don't have season tickets, but usually get a small ticket package from the Wizards, and then catch a few more games a season.

Yes, yes you have epically failed as a father. You must now come to grips with your failure, do the greater good, and kill your son.

Well, I must admit I did act less than fatherly during the Cleveland-Boston series (Boston is my second fav team all the way back from the 80s). After listening to him go on about how great the Cavs were, the Boston series couldn't have been any funner!

EDIT: as weird as it is, my son's second favorite team is the Wizards (Arenas & Caron were his fav players - Caron used to work out in the offseason at Lifetime Fitness in Centreville, where my son went to play BBall a number of times).

I'd just like to add that I admire a son that chooses his own path and father that can let as on be his own man. Still, the Cavs suck!

Name - gesa2 is an acronym for my family GregElainaSamanthaAlexandraAnna. Married with 3 daughters 16, 14 and almost 12. I'm 45 years old.

I grew up in upstate NY, a fan of Syracuse basketball the Knicks and the Buffalo Bills. It killed me for Ewing to be drafted by the Knicks like it would for LeBron to come here now, I loved me some Derrick Coleman and Pearl Washington back then. I played hoops for my HS team, but 6'5" guys with center skills and white man's disease don't play D1 ball. Came South to go to W&M, then med school at MCV. Moved to Fairfax in 1991 for family medicine residency, ready to drop any remaining NYC ties by then (I'm still a Syracuse fan tho).

Me and a buddy got a 10 game package about 20 rows up near center court at the Cap Center (250$!!) for the '92-'93 season. That was my first steady exposure to live professional sports, and by season 2 I was hooked, and already a Bullets fan. I loved the scrappy loser years before Webber Howard et al. We didn't have great talent, but we played hard. Then Webber, Howard, Rasheed and Gheorge - we should have dominated inside for a decade!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsq0oZQLJhI

I left Virginia to move to Kentucky in 1999 when I took a student loan repayment job at a Community Health Center near Huntington WV. If anything my zeal for the Wizards has gotten stronger since I left. There aren't any professional sports within 3 hours of here, so NBA Season Ticket is my friend. Found RealGM looking for better info on the draft a few years ago, and have been lurking with sporadic posts since. I don't do any other chat boards, but the Wizards page is my homepage at work, and I read here everyday. I've gushed about posters before, but the humor, intelligence and passion for the Bullets/Wizards here is really great stuff.

I love Gilbert as a player and for his unfiltered genuine personality. I can forgive the guns. My logical brain has a tougher time with the knees and the 80 million dollars. It would still be so much sweeter for him to find maturity and success here than somewhere else; I hope it still can happen.

Locale: Kansas City.

Username: Dallasshaldune. When I first came to the board those years ago, my screen name was bobbyboucher with some numbers. I had a weird fascination with Adam Sandler comedies, which stymied from my age--15. Yes, that makes me merely 21 years of age. Dallasshaldune, however, is a character I made up for a story I wrote in high school, of the fantasy genre. I'm an English Lit major, and I'm going to teach High School English when I graduate college here in Missouri. I'm a big reader, of both high Literature and escapist fantasy/sci-fi/horror. I hate Stephanie Meyer and Dan Brown both, with a fervent passion. I love music (indie/mainstream alterantive/classic rock/folk) and movies (classics and mind-f*cks. Godfather, Lord of the Rings, the Dark Knight, On the Waterfront, and Lawrence of Arabia are examples of flicks I love).

Marital Status: Engaged to my lovely high school sweetheart. She'll watch games for me and keep me updated when I'm at work, she's so dedicated. A Wizards fan by default.

So why am I a Wizards fan? I've never lived in DC. I have never been to DC. I have seen the Wizards play in person, but I'll get to that in a second. The reason I became a Wizards fan is because in 2001, when MJ jumped on board to play for the team, I was in 7th grade and very interested. I used to watch MJ abuse the opposition when I was really young, with my dad. I remember MJ's shot over Russell, even though I was in the single digits in age. I remember being so pumped, and so excited that MJ, Pippen, and Phil went out on top. MJ's comeback was huge in not only getting me into the Wiz, but it made me interested in the NBA, obsessed even. Watching pro-basketball has been a very worthwhile hobby of mine consistently since. I remember watching stupid scores go up on box scores on line. MJ's game winner v. New Jersey... that was the most epic score change of my life. I had no idea of what happened, but I knew that we won, and Jordan probably hit the shot.

When MJ left, I flirted with changing my favorite team, and especially during Gil's first year with the Wiz, when we were so bad, I was ready to give up the Wizards for the Suns, or maybe the Hornets, but in the end, I couldn't get away. Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in! ;)

I saw the Wizards play once. I was in 8th grade, and my aunt bought me tickets to Chicago and to MJ's last game in Chicago, as a Wizard. It was one of the highlights of my life, and most definitely the highlight of my sports life. The Wizards lost, and one of the banes of my existence, Christian Laetner, played the best for us that night, but being at the United Center, for such a thrilled crowd to watch Jordan's last game, it was intense.

I cheered loudly for the Wizards, to the dismay of the people sitting around me.

And I still love Gilbert, btw. I hope we don't trade him. I can't wait to see him and Wall in the same backcourt.

My deal: I'm 21 years old. I'm a college student. I just really like a lot of sports. I've been playing sports since I was younger. I am into reading, video games, and movies. The usual hobbies. I like writing a little bit. Politics interest me somewhat. I like following politics to see what the daily trends are, see what people believe in. I think it's important to know what other people believe in the country to form my own opinion. I am thinking about majoring in political science and communication. That's pretty much me. I like reading too. I read a lot.

Wiz Fan Creds: I have been a fan of the Wizards since Michael Jordan played for them. I've only been more seriously following basketball from a few years ago. I used to not understand the game that much so I don't think I understood what was going on a long time ago. But now I am more apt in understanding what's happening, and, whats' going on at what particular time, and what not. There was one time when I almost stopped being a Wizards fan last year... but now I have cable and I'm able to watch the Wizards all the time, so I guess I have an excuse for not watching the Wizards before that much of the time.
