Reading a little between the lines, here is what I see...

Lakers think they can work out a deal with Phil to come back, they let Scott know and he then moves on to Cleveland. Shaw hearing that Phil is coming back, does not want to commit to Cleveland knowing that this has to be Phil's last year.

The Lakers working off of the rather strange suggestion that Phil was only going to coach home games and the playoffs this past season, which was found to be untenable to Buss if he was paying $12 mil, now a plan like that may work and give all parties what they are looking for.

Buss gives Phil his pay cut, but Phil coaches all home games, playoffs, and possibly misses select road trips, if not the majority of them. Shaw is promoted to assistant head coach and gets a nice raise and is the coach in waiting and the head coach for away games Phil does not attend. Everyone gets what they want to a certain degree.

I also believe that Farmar was not given a qualifying offer once it was determined Phil was really coming back. Had Scott been the coach and not knowing what they could do in free agency, the Lakers were willing to pay $3 mil or match what Farmar may have gotten elsewhere since Scott would have wanted some type of up tempo point guard option in the fold.

Now Scott and Farmar are both out of the picture and the Lakers can pursue triangle type of players in FA knowing they will be running that system for the foreseeable future.

good work but...

phils getting the full health examination done so he wouldnt be in a predicament and only coaching home games, i kinda want to agree with you about the farmar situation but its all just going off of assumption. So in reality, no matter what happens as long as our core players stay intact and phil comes back fulltime i like our chances
