Marvin and Larry Drew

Post#1 » by Harry10 » Mon Jul 5, 2010 10:58 am

Marvin seems like the odd man out. what he contributes for the team could be easily replaced with an above average D-Leaguer with a 3pt shot.

i think the Hawks should trade Marvin for a quality back up post player or PG, but then again, i also think that this decision should come down to Larry Drew. Woodson's scheme was pretty much to have 4 guys stand around and not get in Joe's way. hopefully Drew will put an actual offensive scheme, if he thinks that Marvin a thrive in the new system, and if Drew also think that he can actually coach Marvin and develop him, then maybe Hawks fans might have something to look forward to.

I disagree. Marvin is our best perimeter defender. He is also a fairly athletic body too. I don't think we should get rid of Marvin for a PG. What PG are we going to get for Marvin... nobody worth trading marvin for.

I'd consider packaging him if there's a deal for someone else with Horford/Smith. I'd have to be a really nice addition. No reason to just get rid of him though right now. His stock is pretty low right now anyway.

Josh Smith is not a SF. His great shot-blocking is wasted when he's out on the perimeter with SFs. Offensively, he doesn't have the jump shot for the position.

So without Marvelous, we'd have to start Mo Evans.

Plus, what have we done to boost MW's trade value that we're talking about cashing him in? We'd get nothing for him and the candidates to replace him are worse (at his position).

Marvin isn't horrible...he's just overpaid for the role he plays on this team. You can find players to replace his role(Barnes and Gomes for example)on the market every year for under the MLE.

Mike Woodson was TERRIBLE at developing offensive oriented young players. I am interested to if Larry Drew will be able to get Marvin's production up to the 17-20 ppg range. Last year was an abomination stat wise for Marvin. But we've seen him pick up the slack offensively for this team on occasion. An offense with him as the 2nd option should get his production at least back to the 15 ppg we saw in previous years.

Trading him when his stock is low won't get us anything in return. best to see if his potential can be reached under a new coach in a new system.

I had hope to see Marvin with a different coach and offensive system that didn't really on beating your man off the dribble from 20 feet. However, that went out the window when Joe resigned. We still may get a new system, but with Joe on the court I believe Marvin will defer too much to ever reach the level of his contract (let alone the loftier expectations that some still have). It could work out if Joe doesn't stop the ball like in the past, but with the pressure of living up to a max contract hanging over him I don't expect Joe to play nicely with the same guys he didn't really respect before.

Before trading Marvin alone and kill any multi-player trade possibilities just to get a backup, I would explore all the other things before.

Now, if we can sign-&-trade Marvin and get Brad Miller or Shaq, OK, but after trying to get better with Marvin+another player.

I know this has been discussed before but this year is a make or break year for Marvin more than any other. New coach/New system generated around motion/ball movement. It's time to show improve and stop just settling and going with the flow. Sick of the excuses with him, it's the way we run our offense or he is being miss used and etc. etc..................... :sour:

I'm over it, #2 picks shouldn't be catered to get the ball. They usually just make it happen regardless. It's just mind numbing and frustrating with this guys inconsistency and i honestly wished at the time and still do that he and Childress had switched places.

#2 options also usually don't get frozen out of the offense, especially when they're hitting. Sometimes Marvin will get 2-3 baskets back to back, and then he won't touch the ball for the rest of the game. Watch the Spurs game again, he touches it in the 2nd half like... twice.

That's the point, there is no way a #2 pick player should be frozen out of game. He should demand the ball more and etc... Marvin just goes with the flow, like he's saying: "WHATEVER". That's not what i thought we were getting. He's clumsy, gets his shot blocked too easily and isn't a good dribbler.
