STICKY: Suns complete S&T with NYK for 16.5M Trade Exception
The Suns still might be able to get something out of Amar'e Stoudemire's departure after all.
Even with Stoudemire agreeing to a five-year, $99.7 million deal with the New York Knicks, the Suns are working on being able to use Stoudemire's rights in a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks for a trade exception or perhaps even free-agent power forward David Lee.
The Suns would do so by also executing a sign-and-trade deal with Chicago and Hakim Warrick, who finished last season with the Bulls.
The Suns agreed to a four-year, $18 million deal with Warrick on Thursday night after Stoudemire had rejected the Suns' five-year, $96.6 million offer that included partial fourth- and fifth-year guarantees.
If the Suns do a sign-and-trade for Stoudemire first, they could receive a trade exception of up to about $17 million in return, unless a Lee contract is included. The Suns would then use part of that exception for the first $4 million year of Warrick's contract in a sign-and-trade with Chicago.
Chicago could benefit by getting a second-round draft pick from Phoenix, which might be able to get a second-round pick and a trade exception or Lee from New York. The Knicks benefit with a small bump in cap space by starting Stoudemire's contract at a lower first-year salary because the deal can have 10.5 percent raises via Phoenix rather than 8 percent raises if done by New York.
Otherwise, the Suns, after more than two years of considering trading Stoudemire, would see him leave for New York without any compensation, other than getting salary-cap relief and no longer being a luxury-tax-paying team.
"If we can do something to help Phoenix, we will," Stoudemire's agent, Happy Walters, said.
NBA free agents can't sign until Thursday.
The Suns also were rumored to be talking to Boston about trading Leandro Barbosa for Rasheed Wallace's contract until Wallace started reconsidering retirement plans. That could have led to a payroll-friendly contract buyout.
The Suns have talked to Cleveland about a deal that would send Barbosa there for Jamario Moon, whose contract expires in a year, and Delonte West, who can be bought out of his contract. Barbosa has two years and $14.7 million remaining on his deal.
Moving Barbosa could put Phoenix in a position to save $3.5 million this season and have more salary-cap space next summer, when Jason Richardson's contract expires, for a maximum-level free agent. However, after Carmelo Anthony, the 2011 free-agency pool won't be nearly as strong, and there is a strong chance of a lockout.

I would LOVE Delonte West and Moon here...much needed depth and some size at the 1/2/3 spots

Going to be a crazy few days, let's hope Coro is right. I trust him over the ESPN hacks anyday.

Nash / Dragic
J-Rich / West
Hill / Dudley / Moon
Lee / Warrick / Clark
Lopez / Frye / Lou
That's a great team.

Sounds better than nothing. Don't like potentially giving up a 2nd rounder for the Hakim Warrick S&T.

West would be bought out and Lou might just get a better deal somewhere else. So count those two out.

I almosted edited my post to take out West but I wanted to keep him there because I think he'd be a good fit here, but I can appreciate the need to save some money if they took on all that salary from Lee/Warrick.
And Lou would probably go somewhere else. And I love him but he wouldn't be needed because Frye and Warrick are the back ups. Lopez and Lee would be the long term starters. No team needs more than 4x 25-35 minute bigs.

I remember Kerr wanted West thrown into Shaq deal. I guess we wouldn't keep him now. I bet Lebron wishes he was. He'd never got to violate his mommy.

If we got Lee, would we really need Warrick though? We could just use Clark or Lawal if he is any good. Or Lou resigned.

Coro keeps flip-flopping and getting my hopes up. If we sign Lee it'll put us over the L-Tax unless we don't sign Warrick. I like the TPE for D-West idea as well. Delonte would be our best perimeter defender but he'll get bought-out most likely. Get the TPE no matter what.

We always get our hopes up. We're the best fan base in basketball we're the most loyal and dedicated. We stay true to our team and we always hope for the best. I'd be happy with David Lee coming here in a sign and trade

Delonte West is EASILY the most creepy person in the league. Usually I have good reasons to hate players and would want people on the team if they could help us but seriously, no **** way do I want that little Hornswoggle Oompa-Loompa STD-infested-looking troll headcase Delonte on my team.
Other than that, it sounds good.

Re: Suns seek return on Amar'e deal
Burningheart I agree like usual with your posts. I don't like Delonte. I think he'd try to bang Nash's mom if he were here. Can't have that. He really is a true motherfuc..... you get the point
He'd be bought out anyway. I wouldn't mind taking a look at Jamario Moon for a season see what he can do. That'd be solid ship Barbosa to them have Moon and get David Lee from the Knicks sign and trade for Stoudemire

Re: Suns seek return on Amar'e deal
Getting Lee would be amazing. It might even make the Suns a better team.
Rebounding would be better and ball movement would get better. It would allow Lopez to assume a bigger role. David Lee is all hustle and keeps his mouth shut for the most part. You'd lose a little in talent but overall I think the Suns might get better.
Lee is a good outside shooter and a great pick and roll guy, like Amar'e. He's a bad defender, but so is Amar'e for the most part. Lee has never been paired with a defensive centre like Lopez for very long. He doesn't get to the line like Amar'e, but he's a much better passer out of the post and into the post.
I've always liked Lee. Just not at a combo C/F.
I say forget Warrick. Give Lee his money. Lawal and Clark and maybe even Lou can handle the back up duties. Frye is going to need a lot of time to earn his contract anyway.

Re: Suns seek return on Amar'e deal
Yeah we really wouldn't feel Amare's loss all that much in our system with Lee playing with a great point guard like Nash. Imagine what Lee could do with Nash when Lee was playing the pick and roll with Chris Duhon lol. Lee could average 24/10 I think pretty realistically

Re: Suns seek return on Amar'e deal
Why, why must you do this to us Coro? So many of us were already past the grieving and denial of Amare, heading towards accepting Warrick as his replacement next season.
Now you dangle this hope right in front of us like a shiny rock of crack. Why don't you just hand us a lighter and metal spoon too?
Time to jump back on the Amare S&T wagon

Re: Suns seek return on Amar'e deal
I don't think u guys reading the article correctly. It says:
"Suns are working on being able to use Stoudemire's rights in a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks for a trade exception or perhaps even free-agent power forward David Lee......The Suns would do so by also executing a sign-and-trade deal with Chicago and Hakim Warrick, who finished last season with the Bulls......Chicago could benefit by getting a second-round draft pick from Phoenix, which might be able to get a second-round pick and a trade exception or Lee from New York."
This means Suns will ONLY make the trade if they can flip this trade over to the Bulls in order to make the Warrick signing more cheaper. It don't mean they want or will get Lee. The only reason Suns are doing this is to save more money by getting Bulls to pay for some of Warrick's new contract. No way in hell Suns are going to keep both Lee and Warrick.
In essence, it is a ploy by the Chicago Bulls - asking the Suns to give them David Lee since they will be missing out on the LeBron, Bosh, Wade sweepstakes and Suns are taking away their guy Warrick.
For a team trying to save money, no way Lee is signed. Remember, you already have Lopez, Frye, Lawal, Clark, Warrick and possibly Dwyane Jones and Dwayne Collins. Lee is only mentioned cause he is going to be flipped to Chicago. That's all.
As for the Barbosa rumors. I highly doubt that too. That would mean Suns get a 4rd string small forward behind Hill, Dudley, and Clark - then buyout Delonte West.
Where does that put the guards? Are Suns going to run Nash-Dragic-Rich to the ground with 40 minutes per night? Most teams have 6 guards. Suns will have just 3 guards total. And let's not even forget the practice sessions on non-game days. What Nash gonna do? Practice all day then play 45 minutes with Dragic being the only guard on that roster off the bench? What if Dragic is out for week or more?
