The All-Important Houston Rockets 2010-11 Nickname Thread

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Tue Jul 6, 2010 2:37 am

So let it be written, so let it be done.

Nicknames. They are important. Just ask the Dream, the Glyde, Iceman, Magic, the Human Highlight Reel, "Air", Dr. J, The Admiral, The Junkyard Dog or The Round Mound of Rebound.

(just don't ask "The Jet." none of us called him that...ever)

We can't allow our beloved team to fall into the category of lazy nicknames. I don't want to cheer for a team that has any K-Dubs, J-Dubs, or Dub-Dubs. I want creativity.

Already we have a good start.

Yao Ming: The Great Wall

Luis Scola: The Ice Cream Man

Chuck Hayes: The Truck

Shane "Batt-Man" Battier - always two steps ahead of you...

Jordan "The Predator" Hill

Now we have to catch the others up.

Kevin Martin....K-Mart is not going to work. I may not be a mod, but I'll ban anyone who calls him that. How I'll ban you without actual power? I'm deceptively clever...

Pumpfake has been kicked around for him. We need more options. Joeyowee - we are not calling him "Hair Model." ;)

Aaron Brooks: There was a cool chinese nickname I heard for him that translated as "Waterbug" which I really liked...or was it "Little Black Bean?"

We need nicknames for Kyle, Trevor, Pat Patterson & Chase.

No....we aren't calling Chase "Did you know he played Volleyball" Budinger.

I go with Paiste for Chase but there has to be a better nickname for him. I rather call Chuck the Chuck Wagon. Kentucky call Paterson P-Pat i believe

Patrick Patterson is an anagram for Rocket Paint Traps
Kevin Martin is an anagram for Minivan Trek
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

I always view Lowry as a Recking Ball when he takes the ball to the paint. Always looking create contact and devastate the defenders in the post. A No Holds Barred type of game.

Postman is also closely related to The Mailman. I hate Malone so I really don't want to call Pat that

I don't care what anyone says. Kyle Lowry is Puck.

- Google translator accidentally gave us "The Plunger" for Sergio Lull. Done and done.

- Battier needs something more whimsical than "Batt man". Shane may be many good things, but dark, dangerous, and mysterious are not on his list. I still like "Patty Cake" for him, since that's what my wife thought I said the first time she heard me say "Battier". (Yeah, she's not so great with the listening.) But if a perfect nickname is defined by its succinct summation of a person's qualities, maybe we should focus with those, as a start. Battier's qualities:
1. Can beat the hell out of a joke like no one on earth. (Thought the 'stache was funny for one game? He'll keep it for 3 months. Red jacket was funny once? He'll wear it the whole season.)
2. Smart. (I think a lot of people in the Rox org. call him "The President", b/c of this/Obama.)
3. Glue Guy: (I like "Elmer" for him, because it hits the glue guy aspect and his overall dorkiness.)

- Scola needs a nic that pays homage to his up-and-under move. "The Shocker" would be funny, but I can't see Bill Worrell approving. (Then again...as long as Bullard didn't tell him, he'd never know the other meaning.)

- I'd say "Mensa" for Patterson, since he graduated in 3 years. But it was just a Communications degree. meh. We'll have to wait and see how he plays.

- I like "Waterbug" for Brooks. It's not funny, but it's fitting.

- "Custer", for Lowry? He's full speed ahead, all the time. For better or worse.

- "Birdinger" isn't all that great, but it seems to already have a foot hold. And it beats hell out of the Worrell-favored "Air Bud". Gag.

- I got nothing for Ariza. He's kinda boring, if we're being honest.

- Kevin Martin waxes his eyebrows. That's something to work with.

- David Anderson looks plain goofy. It needs to be said. Somebody should do one of those face recognition celeb lookalike things with him. Until then, "Lurch" can serve as an adequate place-holder.

That works.

Too bad Calvin isn't around to accidentally mangle it on air, though. The FCC would come down on him harder than CPS ever did.

The Postman reminds me of The Mailman. And the Mailman reminds me of a pedophile. Lets stay the hell away from taht one.

1. Sorry, but it looks like Moofs has rained down word from on high. He does that sometimes. "Puck" it is, then. (It works for me, b/c I'm a dork and like imagining Kyle Lowry playing Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream, dressed in tights and hating his life while being shot up through the stage floor.)

2. I'm pretty sure Bill Worrell will hesitate to call a man of Patterson's size "Pat Pat" to his face. I wouldn't do it.
