How in the world did Tyreke Evans post a negative on/off offensive rating? Is he really the ball-stopper / ball-hog that some people claim he is ?

I think that the numbers here - like many pure stats do - do not tell the whole story of what was going on on the floor. If you combine the factors of inconsistent shooting when Tyreke WOULD kick out; a lack of any sort of consistent post scoring threat until after the trade for Landry (also factoring that he was out injured part of that time AND it took Landry a good 10 or so games to get comfortable and see the ball consistently) thus making Reke THE post scorer through penetration; and the factor (there will be argument of course) that he WAS a Rook and therefore lost shooting percentage on at least five possesions per game that as he establishes himself with NBA officials will become FT's and therefore will not hurt his FG percentage.

I respect numbers and do not ignore them, but often times you really have to look deeper at the situation and see why the numbers look as they do. If you look at the early career numbers for players of the caliber that Tyreke looks to become, they are usually very similar until a team game is established around the key player.

Most star rookies post negative stats in their first years. It's fairly common.

Would you claim a guy like Durant or Roy as a selfish, ball hog, chucker after their rookie season?

I mean, oh no! They must be bad players!

You nailed it, and this is possibly the single most interesting point of the new statistical era. +/- is a new stat, with some major standard deviation to it. It doesn't have perfect credibility - but the trend of rookies being bad at the stat really doesn't leave much room for interpretation. There's just no way any stat could identify such a plausible trend by accident. In one fell swoop, it solidifies the stat, and hammers home how much nuance there is to this game.

The difference is Evans is known as and to many has shown he is a ball hog. I don't know one way or the other because I really don't watch him enough but you can't act like the guy is basing it completely on those stats.
