Darko Out of FIBA World Championship

Post#1 » by Klomp » Wed Jul 7, 2010 8:08 am

Darko Milicic won't play FIBA World Championship with Serbia, late in August. The Serbian big man did not show up at the preparation camp of his national team and then stated that he did not have the permission of T-Wolves to play in Turkey.

He was informed that the club's officials would contact the Serbian Federation and that is why he didn't show up without any notice.

I doubt his agent wants him getting injured before the deal is signed...

well he should be able to sign his deal within a few days (tomorrow right?) whereas the FIBA WC starts in September (or maybe late August, I'm not sure to be honest).

I take this as a sign that he wants to devote his attention to the t-wolves and his new contract instead of getting perhaps injured during the FIBAs. The wolves probably told him how important he is for the team next season and I am sure he is aware that he needs to bring "it". This is his last chance to stay in the NBA for good.

It said in the article that he couldn't get permission from the Wolves to play.

I wouldn't mind seeing him play for Serbia given the amount of time off he's had in the past couple of years. How long does the tournament go for?

Darko is insanely patriotic. This is not by his choice, i might think pressure is coming from somewhere.

And that's well and good. But remember that his NT training has always whipped him into shape. Now we just have to count on his own maturity motivating him, instead of his pride/patriotism, which can be a hell of a force.

I would be inclined to think that his agent might have something to do with it since there's no contract. How have the Wolves been in the past about players playing for their NT?

I hope this changes after the contract is inked. NT play is good for him. With the only negative being potential injury.

It specifically says in the article that the Wolves wouldn't give him approval. I don't see any reason to doubt that's the case.

I'm still quite curious how the wolves have acted in the past about NT play. Is this a Kahn thing, has it always been this way, even with Mchale? Or is it a Taylor thing. Historically, how have the Wolves org. viewed NT play among their players?

We haven't had good enough players outside of Garnett to get a feel of how the Wolves have acted in the past.

Its not like this is the first time any NBA team has done this though. Happens quite often. See: Ginobili, Manu

Between Darko, Pekovic, and Bjelic not being allowed to play, the Serbian team might be in a mess of trouble.

I thought Pekovic and Bjelica were playing though. Isn't that why Pekovic isn't playing summer league ball?

Nice avatar

Anyways, most Serbian fans (Interbasket) think this is good news. They don't want him on the NT due to his attitude and work ethic (in regards to the past).

Nah, Serbia has a lot of NBA level talent on their team and for the future. They'll be alright.

By the way, Pekovic is not Serbian. He's Montenegrin. Kind of good news for Minnesota since Montenegro isn't a top European team. Meaning Pekovic won't be playing much in international tournaments.
