Re: The Sixerfan1976 Off-Season Thread (Update: Page 16)
SF,
Would the sixers be willing to add salary if the following situation presented itself:
If Lebron goes to NY, then the Knicks will then look to acquire another 5-7 million in expiring contracts in order to get Carmelo next summer. Gallinari makes roughly 5 millions. Minnesota wants to dump Al Jefferson and they have interest in David Lee. The sixers could offer the expiring contracts of Kapano and Green to Knicks, Knicks sign and trade Lee to Minnesota along with Galinari, Minnesota sends Jefferson to Sixers.
I believe salaries work because Jefferson straight up for Green and Kapono works when you put it into trade checker. However, the sixers would be getting rid of two expiring contracts and adding around 5 million more to their payroll by taking on Jefferson. The sixers could also take back more salary from knicks (wilson chander or Toney Douglas). This would give the knicks enough cap room to sign Melo. Minnesota dumps Jefferson's contract and gets back Lee and a young small forward. The sixers give up nothing and get back and get back a 25 year old talented big man.

I don't think the Sixers are going to spend 28 million for two PFs, espcially for one who's not interested in playing defense.

If both feel that way, it will negate the negative and thus create an impenetrable defense. --Kahn 204.

Re: The Sixerfan1976 Off-Season Thread (Update: Page 16)
Given the coming lock out and the new CBA, with reduced max salaries, it would be a very dangerous thing for Carmelo to wait a full season before entering free agency in the hopes of signing with the Knicks. He and LeBron would also be terrible fits together. I think it's more boys talking. Carmelo is most likely to sign a nice $65 million, 3 year extension with Denver. If the Knicks are getting LeBron, they will most likely move Curry's expiring deal to get themselves a guard and Gallinari is really a good fit with LeBron because he provides long distance shooting without needing to handle the ball. I don't think you need an insider account - that's more just common sense. Plus, someone with inside connections with the Sixers won't have those same connections with multiple other teams. If he does, than it's the same as reading Stein or Broussard on ESPN.

Man, our front court is really in bad shape. Brand / Speights / Hawes / Smith / (Simmons) / (Thad)? That's bad. Real bad. I wish the Sixers had the ability and inclination to cut everything but the bones of the rebuild and let our record suffer for a couple of years, but I don't think they have either.

Not very likely unfortunately. Stefanski has to win now or he is out of a job. We got a new coach who wants to win now. We have been told countless times that they won't cut ties with Iggy for anything less than a superstar. It just seems like we are going about it in the wrong way. We lucked into Turner who will hopefully become a really good player in time. But even with Turner and Jrue reaching max potential we are not a contender. With the Magic, Celtics, Miami, Bulls and whoever gets LeBron tomorrow night leading the way in the East. I can't see the Sixers being a serious contender and we need to strip it down.

HotSauce77 wrote:That doesn't seem to be an update so much as an opinion. Sixers clearly not getting a start for Iguodala because he's not a star and they are unlikely to just dump him for cap relief for PR reasons. Simmons is the only guy in camp with NBA experience and we need another big, so saying we might sign him as a 13th man isn't saying much. No one is going to give us a 2nd round pick for Green because why would someone overpay for a minimum salary guy and eat into their cap and give up a pick. Kapono is in the last year of his contract and some team might value his shooting enough to give us a second rounder with an expiring contract, but no team with cap space is going to give up $6 million of it, pay Kapono the money, and give up a pick.
+1.

I'll be putting in the request to change SF76's username to "Debbie Downer" if he keeps posting these kinds of reports.

I can't believe I'm going to write this, but I don't know that I'm in favor of releasing Kapono/Green unless (a) we're going to use the space to sign an MLE or (b) they become a locker room issue. We have a really young team already (24.6 years of age on average); the Sixers have 8 players that are younger than 25 and only 2 players that are 30 or older (Brand and Nocioni).
I mean, we need some veterans on the bench... don't we?
Nice post. Just took this off the CBA Related Board:
Salary Cap - $58,044,000
Luxury Tax Line - $70,307,000
MLE - $5,765,000.
Sham has us at 63M with a 3.8M hold for ET which equals 66.8M for 13 guys. This means that there is no reason to move salary even if the team wants to sign a lower prices 14th man. Same old story: Trad Thad Keep Iguodala. There is no financial justification for trading any player. In fact, I don't think we would have be over the LT if we hadn't made the Dalembert trade right now. I haven't second guessed Stefanski on this before but it appears that he moved him too soon (given the shortage of centers). Another fail for this front office.

The trade cut salary by ~3.1 for next season. So in theory we could have just slipped under, depending on where Turner signs. However, assuming we don't seriously win that negotiating battle we would be over by 900,000 still, so it was most likely needed.
Now, whether we could get more from teams at this point is another question.

it was time for sam to go and we got a good return for him.
you also want to allow yourself some flexibility.
say we are having a good year and we want to add a piece at the trade deadline.
you could package green and kapono and take back a guy that makes 25% more than their contracts combined and still be under lux tax.

Hawes? Or Nocioni at 13.5 million over 2 years? It is easier to argue that we simply wanted Dalembert gone, or we wanted the $ savings; but at this point it is really hard to argue that Hawes is an upgrade on the court. Maybe in a few years Hawes will be.

Hawes is better for the team than dalembert. He hated it here and while I thought they would just suck it up until he expired..they liked the return. They really like Nocioni. I think he gets 25-30 minutes a game. Hawes we will see..if he is Brad Miller..he wont hurt you. WE dont have a dominate shot blocker..but we have a good fundamental player. Brand and Speights need to be great rebounders for us.
Collins knows the front court will be a challenge defensively..but he absolutely loves the defense at the 1/2/3.

I feel we should get back in the top 5 again this year, so the 76ers can pick up a PF or C. However, the 76ers are playing for a 39 win season this year with the chance of picking 15th and a player that will never impact the game. MEDIOCRITY is the worst place to be in sports.

I hope not, he hasn't shown much the last several seasons. I think at 10-15 minutes a game, Nocioni might give you more than Kapono did. But Carney also filled this role last season at 1/7th of Nocioni's salary. And Turner should further cut into the available minutes.
If Nocioni is playing 30 minutes, I think it will be safe to say something went horribly wrong.

Nocioni had one bad year...very little risk with that addition. Same with Hawes...little risk with a skilled 22 year old 7 footer...all for SAMMY?? Good deal...

Re: The Sixerfan1976 Off-Season Thread (Update: Page 16)
Well, here we have a team with strong perimeter defenders at the 1, 2, & 3 & maybe Collins likes that. We also have weak defenders at the 4 & 5 & he won't like that. How does this work? There will be so many easy baskets inside & second chances that it is going to negate the good defense that we see from the perimeter guys. I can't say it is the opposite of the past few years because I thought the team was weak defensively on the perimeter as well as inside, though we at least had Sam as a shot blocker as a last line of defense. I am in favor of building a defensive styled team but not one of the bigs is a good man defender & the only weak side shot blocker is Brand who can't jump. This could be ugly & I don't see how the pieces to fix the problem can be obtained.

Chicago wants Iguodala from us and has offered Deng, Taj Gibson and a conditional pick.
Sounded like we would send Iguodala and maybe Kapono or Green depending on what the pick was.
As of now, we continue to maintain that we will not be moving Iguodala.
