Tell Me about Al Harrington

Post#1 » by StocktonShorts » Fri Jul 9, 2010 4:59 am

Jazz fan here. Reportedly the Jazz have shown interest in Harrington, and while I think he'd be a horrible fit on a Jerry Sloan team and perhaps the last guy Utah should go after, I've only seen him play a dozen times in the past few years.

What's your take on him?

Plays hard is a decent defender can lught it up at times. he has some talent and a good work ethich but at the end of the day he is a moron and thinks hes way bertter then he actually is. if he knew how to let an offense come to him and play within himself hed be a very good player. i dont think sloan would approve of him chucking up threes 2 seconds after the ball crosses half court

This. If there was one player who is the complete opposite of a Jerry Sloan player it is Harrington.

when he's on fire, he's pretty nice...

takes a lot of jump shots, doesnt pass.

good 6th man off bench to come and score and provide mismatches.

He will take every shot if he had a choice

Your offensive flow will be ruined by having him on the floor

He will hang on the rim at most inopportune times and getting technicals

He will turn the ball over at least 3 times a game

In summary, he will score alot of points at the detriment of your team's success

He's at best the 8th man on a very good team that comes in when you need desperate offense

Pros
+Good at creating his own shot.
+Good from 3 point range
+Good from mid range
+Decent at driving inside
+Spirited player, if anything.

Cons
-Selfish
Al Harrington, Knicks
Just call him Seven Milliseconds or Less -- Harrington is shooting off the catch unless there's a darned good reason not to. Like if he's on his own side of half court, for instance, or if he's trapped under something heavy. Otherwise, it's time to hit the boards.

While Harrington's decent percentages make him one of the more innocuous gunners, his tunnel vision (7.8 assist ratio) is shocking. Only two players with a usage rate higher than 24 have a worse assist ratio, and those two (Amare Stoudemire and Chris Kaman) are interior players; Harrington is doing this from the perimeter.

-Delusions of being a superstar
-Too out of shape to keep up with his man. You'll see plenty of players whiz by him
-Generally considered to be a low IQ player.

I think bNo is right. On the face of it, he's not a Jerry Sloan type of player. But, having said that, one could very well argue, that Jerry Sloan is exactly the coach that Al Harrington needs to maximize his talent. Al's problem, as we Knicks fans all know, is jacking up silly shots at in-opportune times, which takes a team out of its offense, etc. But there are a lot of other things that Al does. He plays D. He plays hard. He rebounds. And he can be a prolific scorer.

Harrington would be perfect for a team that is looking for someone that can provide offense off the bench. He's a very intense player and is fearless (which is not always good). Can create hs own shot and score from the perimeter as well as near the basket. His intensity and opinion of self, mixed with the fearless style he plays can get him into trouble...chucking up shots he shouldn't be chucking and forcing things when it may be better to pass it to a teammate. He's not nearly as all bad as some of these guys are saying...he's a mixed bag...what he does wel he does real well...he gets into trouble when he gets carried away and starts thinking he's a supersar. He does play hard and if you want a guy that won't back down to anyone, someone that can put points up off the bench, he's your guy. If you don't think you can live with the over zealous style he plays with and the mistakes that come along with it, he's not your guy.

I mean the guy literally doesnt pass... i believe he passed more on his previous teams, but when he came to the knicks he thought he was the best player on our team so he took it upon himself to chuck the ball every time he touched it.. He can score in bunches and give you instant offense off the bench but for the us he was more of a headache than anything else.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Keep 'em coming.

There's a small chance that if he truly does play hard and rebound that Sloan will give him a shot, but I don't think any Sloan player has ever attempted more than 400 threes in a season and lived to tell about it.
