In This Weeks Edition of "What a D****e Bag"...

Post#1 » by College Boy » Fri Jul 9, 2010 5:59 am

Dan Gilbert:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Where to start?

First of all, where does he summon the audacity to proclaim that Cleveland will win a championship period, let alone before Miami?

Second, how can he blame LeBron for chasing a championship that he just wasn't going to get in Cleveland?

Third, dude, where is your professionalism? He really sounded like a bitter ex girlfriend. No matter how you feel personally, you're always supposed to publicly thank the player for their stay, and wish him the best in the future. SMH

Fourth, I like how he acted as though the Cavaliers organization had nothing to do with all of his hype. If a child is spoiled, blame the parents.

Fifth, why is he acting as though Cleveland didn't profit from LeBron the last 7 years? Let's be honest, never in US history has any one outside of Cleveland cared about Cleveland before LeBron.

Sixth, who does he think he is, Celie? Until you do right by me... Give me a break.

I think he has just embarrassed the entire Cavaliers organization. This was truly, truly sad... :noway:

Meh. He's a fan-favorite so it's only natural to expect this.

Really unprofessional and embarrassing though.

On the Cavs board they're saying its not that he left, it's how he left.

What about how he left? Its not like he lied to them. He didn't pull a Carlos Boozer. He didn't choose them, accept it, get over it. He didn't owe them a thing. He tried his hardest to win it, he saw it wasn't going to happen, he bounced.

I guess Dan Gilbert never heard of the high road.

ya, he gave them a long ass time to build a contending team and they couldnt do it. it was 1 on 5, they had more than enough time to get another all star. jordan needed pippen, not just a buncha role players. lets see wat cleveland does now

It was a good laugh but this is highly embarrassing and very unprofessional. Someone like him who owns the team should not have said or released something like this. I just think that is wrong how he left the team by airing a one hour special of his decision. James leaving was not a bad thing but just can't get past the broadcast of something that take 2 minutes on Sportcenter like Bosh and Wade did.

Lets be honest here... With years of build up, just releasing a statement would not suffice. He's arguably the biggest star in sports right now. People were going to have questions regardless of which team he picked. So he did the right thing in my opinion. People can call it self absorbed if you want to, but this particular situation called for it. Not to mention he used this attention to raise $500,000 for the Boys & Girls Club and 5 scholarships to the University of Phoenix. So it's not like he did this for his own glory either.

Dan Gilbert is right on one account though. LeBron did quit during last playoffs.

That was probably the only thing ESPN could've done to save face.

Is it really true that D-West is back dooring James mom? That in itself gives James the right to leave the team.

I don't think so. I think it was sincere. LeBron is quite the philanthropist.

@zapatsblood: Yeah it's true. That's why he was so distant from his team in the last two games.

I didn't get to actually watch the broadcast, but it shouldn't have taken a hour to say you'll join the ______. Half hour tops. If he really cared about the Boy's and Girl's Club, he wouldn't have mentioned them at the last moment - that to me is just Lebron and ESPN saving face for agreeing to do such a ridiculous broadcast.

Well first of all, it wasn't as though the that was main purpose. I think he just used this opportunity to do some good for an NPO. It was a throw in, sure, but not contrived IMO.
Secondly, I just don't understand why everybody thinks this is so ridiculous. Its not like he just stretched out the word Miami long enough to take up an hour. He made an announcement and they interviewed him afterward. How is that so inconceivable. That seems like standard operating procedure to me. Anytime something big happens pertaining to sports, they interview the athlete. Plain and simple. It was simply a personal press conference.
Like I said, after years of speculation, you didn't think they were going to interview him about his decision.

I don't think anyone is questioning standard procedure.

I personally thought that this broadcast was ridiculous because of the way the media hyped it up (with Lebron enjoying every second of it). The guy had months to think about his decision - he didn't have to go up to ESPN and ask for his own special broadcast just so he could feel bigger than he already is. Look at guys like Durant and Kobe for example - they didn't ask for their special 60 minute interview when they signed their extensions. They were upright and professional about it and didn't go around entertaining ideas.

Lebron basically said, "FU" to the Cavaliers' organization during this whole charade with no respect to their front office. If he wanted to leave, he could've just privately told the Cavalier organization that he was planning to join the Heat. He didn't have to blow up everything and create a fiasco.

Was Gilbert's reaction unprofessional and childish? Yes. Does he have a right to be mad? Hell yes! Put yourself in his shoes. You give Lebrons friends jobs in the Cavs organization. You build a pratice court for him near his home. You allow his entourage to travel with the team. You allow him to have some say so in players coming into the organization, just to please him. You castrate the coach so that Lebron can handle the ball 75% of the time (which is a large factor in him having such wonderful assist numbers and other stats). You zip your lip and take it when he decides to quit on the team in about 3 games of a playoff series. All you ask in return is for him to tell you if he doesn't intend to return (a decision I'm sure he made a looonnng time ago, like in 2008!), but what do you get? Dragged along for months by this buffoon, being lead to believe you still had a chance at signing him, only to be kicked in the nuts (along with the entire city of Cleveland) on national TV. You were betrayed by a man that you did everything in your power to appease. As a man, he did owe Dan Gilbert and the city of Cleveland something. A little respect. I for one am proud of Dan Gilbert for saying what a lot of people were thinking but were afraid to voice.

Cleveland ownership put all its eggs in one basket. Lebron betrayed them but almost anyone else would have done the same. It's his dream so let them live it that way. Winning will cure everything

Build a championship team around him and he wouldn't have left. As a owner, that's YOUR job!! Gilbert has no idea what it takes to win a championship and hence will never get one as long as he's the owner of the Cavs. When kobe wanted out of LA, Buss made sure they got some players and got them soon.

Good luck trying to get anyone to come play in Cleveland. It's already a place where nobody wants to go and now with a dick owner. Hahaha
