Favors Stinking Up Summer League

Post#1 » by Kurosawa » Thu Jul 8, 2010 3:51 pm

For what it's worth, the Nets board is up in arms over Derrick Favors' Summer League play so far. Posters are comparing him to Kwame Brown or worse.

Rookies have been known to look awful in SL play, only to emerge during the regular season, so perhaps this can be ignored. Still, the consensus is that he looks nowhere near ready to contribute as a rotational player.

Could it be that all those tiny red flags about his lack of productivity at Georgia Tech were overlooked because of his awesome athleticism? Hmmm.

So Count Your Lucky Stars Part I: We could have traded Wes Johnson plus change for Favors and witnessed a meltdown on this board of epic proportions. Kahn would have been crowned King Idiot for life.

Another Nets news flash: New Jersey signs Travis Outlaw; 5 years, $35 million. Unless they do something shocking for David Lee, that just might be its premier FA signing.

So Count Your Lucky Stars Part II: We could be Nets fans.

Travis fricken outlaw for 7 million a year... and we still crap for the Darko deal.

Lets offer them Pek for Favors now while the gettin' is good. Rubio will make Favors look like a stud.

edit: looks like its outlaw for 5 mil a year... same rate as Darko... Still.

i don't understand why anyone would be upset at favors struggling. it was common opinion that he was going to take a number of years still to become a good player

Yeh, first report of $35 million was a typo.

I will take an athletic/defensive minded big with that type of potential any day of the week. Im sure the Nets will as well.

They still have a very young team and since they are striking out heavily in FA, I would expect them to go forward with a youth movement..

From wyn at Canis Hoopus:

$6,050,000 / $6,534,000 / $7,018,000 / $7,502,000 / $7,986,000

You're writing off a freakishly athletic big coming from a poor development college after he has played 3 summer league games in which he hasn't looked that bad? :jawdrop:

I've watched him play. Yea he has gotten into foul trouble and hasn't set the league on fire but he hasn't looked that bad to me at all. He has shown energy and has tried to play hard. Evan Turner hasn't been looking like a stud either. Neither of these guys have come out like Tyreke Evans did last year, they will be okay, let the rooks struggle a bit before you throw them under the bus.

Turner has shown a lot more reason for concern so far than Favors and I'm by no means writing either player off. Turner has struggled to beat anybody off the dribble and takes far too long to break down the defense. Favors has looked like an absolute physical specimen. And anybody could have told you far before the draft that he was 2 years away from helping an NBA team win, but damn is he strong and athletic.

In the 08 Summer League Derrick Rose was considered "biggest disappointment". Rose shot 29.4% from the field. While Michael Beasly was considered one of the best big men. Just goes to show you its way too early to write off Favors over a couple Summer League games.

Seriously. how long have these guys been on their teams? 3 weeks? Like that's enough time for everybody to get into a groove. Not to mention how hard some of the players are playing. They are going up against vets who are fighting for their careers, there are some hungry people out there who would love nothing more to show up a Evan Turner or Derrick Favors. For Nets fans sake I hope Favors doesn't run into Nikoloz Tskitisvili out there, he will drop 60 on Favors chin and some Nets fan will hang himself.

Yea I saw Turner yesterday get trapped in the corner and threw the ball right to the defender. He'll improve though. As for Favors, I haven't complained about the way he's been playing at all.

These guys really need to move Favors for a proven low post scorer, but hopefully one that's still young. Also need to move Courtney Lee since there's no room for him now w/ Outlaw on board. If only they could combine those 2 needs into one trade to save time

David Aldridge says it is a flat 7 million per year for 5 years.
Someone notify Wyn so he can change it.

Just like i told the jersey board, it means absolutely nothing. Sheldon Williams looked like a stud while our rookie Horford paled in comparison in the SL about 3 years ago. See how that turned out??

Turner with back to back 1/6 games totaling 9 points. Seemed like every other shot he took was blocked, shaky handles. It's not just that his J isn't falling, he can't get to his spots or drive effectively. I think he'll be get better at drawing fouls quickly and he has the type of game that will improve dramatically when playing with higher caliber teammates. Could see him being a triple double threat

Summer league = dominated by guards

Preseason will be more telling.
