Of Our Current Team What Players Are Core Pieces Going Frwd?

Post#1 » by Baseline Runner » Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:19 am

Obviously we don't have any great superstars on our team to build around but who should we keep as core pieces? In my opinion Mo Williams and Varejao are both guys who can contribute to this team for a long time. Both are in their mid-twenties and both are very good at what they do, Mo being a great shooter and ball handler and Varejao a great garbage guy. It's really not easy to replace what they bring to the team with other players.

The rest of the team is trade fodder as far as I'm concerned. JJ Hickson may be a piece but I feel we can get more out of trading him than what he would become as a player. I used to love Delonte but his personal issues really limited his production, and Mike Brown benching him much of the year didn't help. Jamison really is a liability at this point. It's not that I think we should be in rebuilding mode, I just don't think he is a very good player. He is not efficient offensively and pretty bad defensively. If we can get anything out of him in a trade I'm all for it.

Jamison and Williams have the worst contracts. I would get rid of them. In terms of youth and development, JJ Hickson, Danny Green, and Christian Eyenga are really the only pieces moving forward. I would like the Cavs to bring in Eyenga and let him develop so we can decide whether he is worth keeping. I would rather the Cavs clear cap room and have one bad season so we can bring in a player to build around.

You never heard that term? That it basically means a guy who is scrappy, gets rebounds, gets easy buckets around the basket, etc.

What's going to happen to Z going forward? If He leaves who the heck is gonna play Center?I think we need to Keep as many current players as we can moving forward.I do agreee that letting West go might be more of an addition by subtraction. It's gonna be interesting to see how this roster finalizes.

The core of your team right now is just JJ Hickson. You might as well sign Eyenga and D-League him. This is a decent year to gamble... the clippers drafted big sofo in the 2nd round awhile back but the big guy declined the offer because he was under contract in Greece. In fairly limited minutes he played decent last season. As it always seems to go... if he was only in shape. You sign him to a cheap two year deal (2nd year only part. guaranteed) and you toss him in the D-league and see if they can get him in shape for next year.

Send longer contracts to New York for Curry's expiring deal plus Bill Walker. Then your core turns into Hickson and Bill Walker. You might look into Kmart and JR Smith for a year. But be careful... you want to end up Barnes or Perry next June... the idea is to avoid long term mediocrity.

C- One year deal
PF- Hickson
SF- Moon
SG- Bill Walker
PG- West

Get your behinds kicked this year so in future years you can compete with the Heat and the elite in the east.

Because of their contracts it makes sense to move Mo and Jamison if you can.

Andy is the perfect 3rd big and since you have him locked up at a decent cost you keep him.
Hickson, Green, and Eyenga should get some playing time, but really I want to see Boobie back on the court. He and Mo were pretty much redundent so it hurt him, but the guy can still play and he's clutch. I'd like to see him with a shot at starters minutes then you'd know if he's core or not.

Absolutely EVERY PLAYER on the team should be available right now. If the team is re-loading, then it needs to be done with every resource! There is not one single player that is on the team that we MUST keep, as none of them project as star-quality, or foundation players. Hickson could reach "solid starter" status, and "possibly" make an all-star appearance as a back-up... but he will never be a top-25 player in the league. If the Cavs receive the right deal, that makes the team better, then anyone and everyone should be available.

Of all players we own the rights to, the ones I'd "like" to hold on to are Christian Eyenga (after watching him...dude has mad talent). And Sasha Kaun. However, I'd move either one for the right deal.

We need younger, athletic players at every position, that can run all day, and defend. We need ball handlers, who can create their own shot or pass very well. We need Legit big men who can run the P&R and run the floor.

Keep your eyes on the wiretap, and your ears glued to talk-radio (sports).... you'll notice that EVERY player the Cavaliers target have the skill-set to fit in Byron's offensive & defensive schemes.

I agree that everyone should be available, but I was impressed with JJ when he played center last year. Now, he wasnt great but he held his own for the most part, and should keep improving. He came in after his freshman season, and while many "experts" say that the most improvement in a players game comes between year one and year two, I think that for guys who come into the league so young they really need 3-5 years to become the players they can be.
There are instances like Chauncey Billups, even though he stayed in college, where he really didnt blossom until he got into the right system and gained the confidence to become an all star player, so JJ is a guy I would like to see the Cavs hold onto if possible.
I would also like to see Gibson get a fair shot, and as for Mo, while I like Mo I think with his contract being what it is, he isnt going to get any better than he is now, he definitely should be shopped to see what we could get for him. Same with Jamison, maybe a contender looking for a scoring 6th man will take him on. There are several teams that dumped their roster for these FA's this year that are going to be looking for some scoring, and will have a hard time selling tickets after missing out on the prime FA's.

Gibson (nobody will take him anyway)
Eyenga (should be brought over btw)
Green
JJ
Kaun (should also be brought over)

Everyone else should be shipped elsewhere for the best combo of expirings/youth/picks you can find. Unfortunately instead Gilbert is going to try some (Please Use More Appropriate Word) rebuild on the fly **** that won't work.

Hopefully we keep Gibson. He wrote a great letter on his web-site.

I'm not sure the Cavs have any future "core" guys right now. Hickson is the only guy who could potentially have starter qualities in the future. Obviously, Mo can start in this league but his skill set is easily replaceable so I wouldn't call him a "core" player.
