Assuming they aren't expecting any additional money per year (beyond what would get added in the 6th year), the S&Ts free up a slight amount more money in the first year (assuming 10.5% raises vs. 8%).

A 6th year might also make them more willing to give up a little more money over the life of the deal in exchange for the added security of that 6th year. Hopefully not, but it's possible.

Cleveland will not give LeBron a S&T. That's a fairy tale.

But Riley has pulled off crazier things.

So do you think that they are all going to take even less? They are already giving up close to $1M in the first season to sign Miller. I just don't see them going from $16.5 max, to $15.5 to $14.5. Especially considering that pay cut is greatly magnified over 6 years.

And I wouldn't worry about signing vet min guys, those are usually the last ones to sign. But I must say, there shoud be some stiff competition for the quality vet min guys b/w Heat, Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Magic, etc...

14.5 with increases of 10.5% is basically the same as 15.5 with increases of 8%. Basically if we were unable to do S&T's then we wouldn't have gotten money for Haslem. They really only lose out on $10mil over the life of a 6 year contract. Now you'll say "only", but these guys are still gonna make over $110mil. What's an extra 10~15mil between friends ;o.

The S&Ts are specifically to keep LeBron and Bosh happy by getting them a 6th year and higher raises per year (10.5% of the first year contract vs. 8% if they signed with Miami outright). It also means all three can get equal contracts vs. Wade getting a bit more and a 6th year for signing with his own team.

It has nothing to do with anything else, although they might be willing to take a smaller 1st year salary since they are getting the bigger raise and 6th year.

But its likely Miami will max out their salaries with LeBron + Bosh + Wade + Miller. And will only have minimum salary contracts left to offer Bell, Haslem, QRich, Joel Anthony and the rest. Because what's the point in all 3 taking millions less just so they could offer Haslem $2M instead of the $1M of a minimum contract.

sounds like S&T for both bosh and lebron.

as great as it sounds for player to accept vet min to play with the 3, wouldn't there be some major concern about shorting your $s with a lockout and new cba looming? i think most fa's will want their worth especially since there are teams with spending money available.

If the Big Tree were to have signed max contracts, then I believe the Heat would only be able to offer a single contract of about ~$15 million over 5 years. If they spend more money than that, then it would have to come off the salary of the Big Three.

If the Heat were to sign Miller and Haslem to $30 million contracts each... then that's like asking the Big Three to take a $45 million pay cut over 6 years. Possible? Yes. Likely? I don't think so.

I'm guessing Miami has rescinded their offer to Miller, and will try to keep Haslem instead.

You're assuming Haslem got the same contract as Miller. Also if the Heat resign Haslem before Wade, they can do it without recinding his bird rights and thus can sign him on 10.5% increases rather than 8% increases. Haslem could possibly get a a contract worth $30+ million over 6 years with a low starting number of like $4mil (is he willing to take that is another issue). Also I'm thinking Millers contract is a bit less than the $30mil stated, in middle of 25-30mil range.

Its real people... whether you want to believe it or not...

I dont know how Riley is doing it... but he is...

Udonis Haslem apparently will not be left out of the party.

The Miami Heat mainstay who seemingly was about to be left out of the franchise's return to its heyday, appears to be on the verge of a free-agent return after some late maneuvering by Heat President Pat Riley.

In a significant turn of events, the Heat completed a sign-and-trade agreement Friday night with the Cleveland Cavaliers for free-agent forward LeBron James, who already had agreed to join the Heat,

The maneuver offered Riley the flexibility to re-sign Haslem. An NBA source said Friday the expectation was Haslem would now return to the Heat.

"We're working on his situation," agent Henry Thomas told the Sun Sentinel Friday night by email.

The Heat also has been involved in plans to add Washington Wizards free-agent swingman Mike Miller. The Heat has been talking with the former University of Florida standout about a contract in the five-year, $30 million range. Riley declined to address where those negotiations stand.

In essence, the Heat is completing its end game.

So...no point guard, no center, no draft picks, and no cap space.

This is seriously some sleazy low down garbage.

Complete evasion and manipulation of the salary cap.

I definitely think the Heat's second rounders are being undersold. At least one of them should be a contributor right away. I assume all have to sign at the minimum?

I agree with you. I don't know how they are able to have three max players and still sign Mike Miller and Haslem to non league minimum contracts.

LeBron is going to play PG in a Magic Johnson role. Thats what Riley pitched to him and how he convinced Bron to come to Miami.

The line up is:

PG - Bron
SG - Wade
SF - Miller
PF - Bosh
C - Lucky fan sitting in section 342, row 18, seat 6...

They'll be fine. You only really need an 8 man rotation. With Miller and Chalmers, all they need to do is grab a couple of big men and a backup wing and then sign a bunch of scrubs to fill out the rest.
