Sign and Trade

Post#1 » by Lava Rock Kid » Fri Jul 9, 2010 6:06 pm

Boozer and Amare both did sign and trades after they agreed to leave, Utah and phoenix both have a 12-14 mill trade exemption, and they had to give up a future 2nd round pick. At least this way Cleveland has a chance to recoup a good player in the next year.

I didn't expect it would be, but I think its now an option.
I have to think Miami would go for it to get their guys back even on salary.

Most agents push for these kinds of things. Lebrons agent doesnt want to make enemies with any team, he has future players to consider. Miami has no reason to hurt Cleveland and will gain a 2nd round pick.

The Jazz have one for boozer right now, I am not sure who you can use it for right now, but midseason when some team is rebuilding that is how you get a Gasol.

13 and 15 1sts plus a $16M trade exception, which is already being speculated will go to get Carmelo. Miami doesn't have a draft pick for the next 4 years, that's just crazy

Miami is one torn ACL away from being screwed for years.

We also got 2 second rounders if what I saw was accurate. Not sure what they'll be worth, but now we can root for injuries (yeah, I know that was almost as tacky as LeBrons "it's all about me" event last night".

They can't trade consecutive picks, so the picks they are getting rid of go over the next 5 yrs.

Buying 1st round picks do work. If not, ask the TrailBlazers.

Cavaliers Complete Sign-and-Trade Deal with Miami

CLEVELAND, OH - July 10, 2010 - The Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat to acquire the rights to five future draft picks...

"This deal provides us with multiple key assets and additional flexibility as we move forward for both the short term and beyond," said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant.

Cleveland now owns two of Miami’s first-round draft picks starting no earlier than 2013 and continuing through 2017, the Heat’s 2012 second-round pick from New Orleans, and the future second-round pick Miami acquired from Oklahoma City. Additionally, Cleveland will have the right to swap 2012 first-round picks with the Heat...

I dont think swapping the 2012 first rounders is really an option. So 2 low first rounders most likely, 2 second rounders and a trade exception for 16 mil. Its better than nothing, and maybe the picks can be moved if needed to push along other acquisitions.

You never know, those picks go out 7 yrs, that even longer than these guys are signed for. That last pick might actually end up being worth something.

I had forgotten about the thread in the above link till the details of the trade had come out. Glad to see Cleveland took advantage of it.

Also to FGump if you're lurking around since I didn't even know you responded in that thread. Instead of questioning my understanding, you should have found out WHY I was saying the article was flawed. It was flawed because the writer made it sound like the only way a team could do a sign and trade was through the 125% rule making it sound like Dallas had the best option. My point was that was not true and that a team under the cap could absorb the amount and give Cleveland picks and a big trade exception.

You TOTALLY missed the train here!!!

#1 The 2 1st round picks from Miami are for between 2013 & 2017. (The Cavs hold options on them. The Cavs can take the 1st one in 2013 or 2014, and they can take the 2nd one in 2015,16, or 17)

#2 The right to trade 1st round picks in 2012 in very key. It "appears" to be useless when you simply read it in the paper. However, that 2012 pick is the one the traded with Minnesota. So, they actually have the right to exchange picks with Minnesota... not Miami. (In the Beasley trade on Thurday night, Minnesota received a 2nd round pick from Miami, and traded 1st round picks in 2012 - that is what the Cavs now have...only it's an "option," so if the Cavs don't want it, then they keep their own... But, they will want it.)

#3 The 2 second round picks. The first is New Orleans' 2012 pick, which will be a high 2nd rounder. The other is a 2013 2nd rounder from OKC...likely later in the round...unless Durant get injured or something.

#4 The trade-exception. A lot of people thought that we should just keep out cap space... about 12.6 million (if delonte were waived). However, the T/E is worth 14.56 million. That means the Cavaliers could trade for Al Jefferson (12 million), and still have 2,56 million for another player. In addition, the Cavs will not release Delonte. They will trade him to a team that needs to shed salary, and they will either get a good player, or picks (from a team that wont make the playoffs). In addition to all of that, the Cavaliers will have the MLE (they are over the cap by 2 million), so they can use that to sign 1 or more players for 5.8 million (MLE can be split).

This is what you have to realize: The Cavaliers won 61 games last season. LeBron didn't do that by himself...even if some people think he did (he thinks so). If the Cavaliers (hypothetically) traded one of Miami's 1st round picks and the TPE to Philly for Iguodala, then the Cavaliers have a very good SF to take the place of LeBron. Keep in mind that Byron Scott likes an up-tempo game, and players who defend. Iggy's biggest strength is his up-tempo game, and his defense. Al Jefferson is unlikely, because he isn't much of a runner. Byron will have the team running, so Jefferson is very unlikely.

Any way, the Cavs could actually be very good next year. It is hard for some people to see without LeBron...but keep in mind that LeBron has been here 7 years and we never won a title... so LeBron is not the be all that ends all; although he'd like you to think he is/was.

The Cavaliers are going to surprise a lot of you next season. Most of you think that they'll be lucky to win 40 games. I am pretty sure that if Grant & co. does as they said (which it appears they are going to, or else they wouldn't have made this move), then the Cavaliers are not going to be a push-over next season.
