No, build up cap room for next year to give Marc Gasol/Al Horford the max and get the Jazz an actual center.

thanks for the poll babyjax13

all down to the millers call, I'd be happy to see Matthews back if the Miller family matches this but the contract is just too big. Portland is nuts..and will end up over the cap for Matthews who will play behind Roy unless they play small ball lineup. Let them eat their medicine with the toxic contract

Yes. It's not about screwing over Portland. It's about the fact we found our SG who has a complete game and is only going to get better. He's a good character guy, works hard, and has the desire to do all the dirty work needed to win.

Too little upside? He went undrafted, won a spot in training camp through summerleague, and managed to beat out Brewer and CJ for the starting SG spot through his commitment to defense and his offensive game. All in one season of experience. There is a reason why multiple teams were after Mathews. It's because he has quite a bit of upside.

I'm with Carr. I wish it was less, but lock it up.

I would call up Detroit and ask about Rip using our TPE. If that was possible and we could get it done, then so long Wes and a big FU to Portland.

I don't see the upside either.

He's a quality SG. But, I don't see star potential in him.

If the Jazz are resigned to have a quality instead of a star SG for the next 5 years I say sign him. But, don't be surprised when we decide we have a hole at SG in 2-3 years. I thought 25 mil over 5 was too rich, I think 7 mil a year is WAY too much money. If he was younger, or taller, or his weaknesses were more addressable, I'd say sign him. But, as it is I think the player you saw last year will be the same player you see 5 years from now.

I vote no. Just too much money, and will hamper our options next offseason. I'd rather just suck this year and have a good lotto pick and cap room to make a big splash next year. But, that's just me.

Matthews is a long-term investment who will be with us for the foreseeable future. Rip is a short-term, overrated solution who is steadily declining and has a worse contract.

I dont think you really have enough infomation to decide whether he is worth $34M over the next 5 years or not based on only one season but since that is all we got to go on.

They have to try an be objective. Forget we have already lost Boozer and Korver this offseason for nothing. Forget it is Portland again. He is young and he did play well but I cant justify it, so I am saying No.

Lets move on.

For how long is Rip's contract? Having Rip would be awsome IMO especially if we sign Brewer back. Having Rip-CJ-Brewer-Haward-AK at the wings would rock as all of them complement the team and eachother. You'd have a vet, rookie, spotup shooters, slashers, defense, athletes. And if Rips deal isn't more than 2 years, id seriously look into it.

The cap hit is about $5M. The cash payout is about $9M.

I don't see why we wouldn't match it, Wes just seemed to fit right in with what we did offensively he showed a lot of versatility. The guy produced in his rookie season, you can't tell me he doesn't have potential to be even better.

Never overpay for a backup. You pay the full MLE to a center or scorer or 6th man of the year candidate. Not a backup. I think that is what the league will go back to with this new CBA. Wait a year and the price for a Wesley Mathews type player will be back to $3-$4M where it should be.

How easy was it for us to get a player like him back when it was like that? When was the last time the Jazz had a quality, team changing SG?

LOL. Let Portland use all that cap room on a backup SG.

Greg Miller ought to come out of this with a nice lesson: No risk, no reward. If the Jazz had more faith in their own FO and took some risks like the Rockets do with their favorite 2+1+1 team option baby first-round contracts, they would have had one of the best trade assets in now in Matthews. As it is now, they have to either overpay or let him walk.

Chalk it up to lesson learned, and go find 'emselves another undrafted SG while praying Hayward is consistent enough to crack Sloan's regular rotation.

What makes you guys think that KOC will get off his ass and go make a good trade or a good signing? it's not happening, that by itself is reason enough why we need to keep Matthews.
