Rip Hamilton
Giving Wes' toxic deal and all, I'm thinking getting Rip for our TPE wouldn't be a bad idea. Solid defender, great shooter-team player, veteran, High BBIQ would fit in great on our system. Any reason not consider this??

If it's 13 mil per, it ain't as bad. AK's salary is off next season, Okur's the year after that and he would expire at the same time as Deron so we'd be free to offer him a lot including the option of adding FAs that year to play next to DWill. I'd feel worse to be "forced" to pay an undrafted sophmore 34 mil over the course of 5 years than take a risk and get an All-Star shooting guard for 39 mil in 3 years.

FORMER all-star SG. We don't really know if he cares about the game that much anymore. Very risky, and could handcuff the Jazz for the next couple of years. I would say no.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Last season I was all for having Rip on the team, I have since changed my mind. I still think he'd be effective but not enough to justify his contract.

No, thanks. Was overrated when he was in his prime, so I have no use for him at that price in the present day.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Michael Redd might be a safer choice since he will expire (or Jason Richardson) but I think that Hamilton is still a good player for our system. He and Prince looked out of place having to create their own offense with the ball, having Deron and being in Sloan's system would revive his career.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Is Hamilton twice the player that Matthews is? Really? He is already 32, coming off an injury plagued year, and we will be paying him until he's 35.......
I mean if we're not going to match Matthews' contract because of financial considerations, how can we afford to take on Hamilton's deal without discarding any salary?

We'll be screwd finantially anyways, but Rip's deal is shorter and I like the veteran preseance and championship experience he brings. I'm also afraid that last season was a sort of "fluke" since it's all we have to go by. At least Millsap we had seen for a while and really had a better idea of him and his development as a player. But Wes? IDK and that deal is far more dangerous IMO.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Plus RIP is a known commodity...whos to say Wes doesnt have a sophomore slump, now that teams are aware of him and scout him more thoroughly? His production dipped in the playoffs, and I think that was the reason why. I would much rather have RIP than Wes, I just dont know if the money/contract situation makes it worth it.

Re: Rip Hamilton
I understand that, but I dn't see any reason for Matthews to play any worse than he did last year...... It's not like he shot some outrageous percentage, that he's not likely to repeat......
If we match Matthews' deal we are not screwed financially by any means...... We are if we trade for somebody like Rip.......

Redd may be out until February.

Jazz are way better off staying put and having a lot of financial flexibility for next season unless a deal comes along that they can't refuse like grabbing Gortat.

Re: Rip Hamilton
We don't need to spend our available exceptions on declining SGs for a team going nowhere. Until we address the frontline issues it is a waste of money to try to improve the other positions unless a bargain drops in our lap.

Oh I agree, however with this whole Mathews ordeal, our SG spot just opened up. Face it, WE DON'T HAVE SGs!!! So, either we go hunting for a "new Mathews" among undrafted or vet summerleague FAs, or we do something. Rip is IMO our most possible aquisition, and with AK's expiring deal, it won't be as bad next offseason. So basically what I'm saying is I prefer paying Rip 13 mil this next season than Mathews 9 mil. It would also send a message to DWill that we are willing to make moves in order to win.
The other alternative is to say bye to Mathews and go after... MORRIS ALMOND!!!!! HIS TIME HAS FINALLY COME!!!!
wait WHAT!?!?!?!

Re: Rip Hamilton
I prefer to sign a more reasonable contract with somebody else for a shorter term. Regroup after the next CBA and decide what is the best way to move forward. With the TPEs we have available I don't see us being a serious contender for the title with any additions for next year. We need to be patient and take a longer range view which will set us up better in the future. The teams that stay bad for longer terms make knee jerk reactions to fact of life changes. For instance a few years ago the Warriors signed Fisher to a ridiculous contract and the Lakers allowed him to walk. His contract helped keep the Warriors bad for years.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Hamilton's contract isn't that horrible. It is actually pretty fair in today's standards. If he were on the free agency market this offseason, he would have gotten something pretty similar (Ray Allen 35, signed 2 year $20 million deal). Hamilton much like Reggie Miller, is going to be fairly consistent even in the remaining years of his contract. He is in exellent shape.
I'm willing to bet he is going to come out strong for whatever team he is traded too this offseason. He has been stuck in Detroit on a mediocre team for the past two seasons, he is ready to contend again.

Re: Rip Hamilton
Pistons fan here,
Rip needs to play for a contender. He'd fit perfectly on the Jazz. He's 32 but is conditioned to play effectively for atleast 4 more seasons. Last year's ankle injury was a fluke. He's fully recovered and played his best basketball after the all-star break where he averaged over 20 ppg and 5 assists. He doesn't fit anymore on the rebuilding Pistons and a change of environment to a team that actually wants/needs him is exactly what he needs. I would love to see Rip play along D Will.

The thing that I like is that he won't be asked to do much outside of playing D which he does faily well and being a vet leader. The rest is just custom fit to his game. Solid shooter coming off of screens and spotting up with DWill would be down right AWSOME. His contract isn't as bad and it expires the same as Deron's so we would have lots of $$$$ that summer to resign DWIll and other FAs etc. To be honest, this is the move I want the Jazz FO to do the most out of the possibilities. We also get to keep the MLE which we can use a fraction of to bring back Brew.
DWill / Price
Rip / Brewer
CJ / Hayward
AK / Millsap
Okur / Koufos
That'd be a really good team and it won't tie us down much either.
