Depth Chart: 2010-2011 - Post-Hedo Trade

Post#1 » by TheMan44 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 8:07 am

It appears Hedo Turkoglu is the new Suns PF. With this trade, there are only 2 possible scenarios in the Phoenix Suns depth chart.

Depth Chart 1 (The Expected Chart):

G Steve Nash - Goran Dragic - Free Agent
G Jason Richardson - Josh Childress
F Grant Hill - Jared Dudley - Earl Clark
F Hedo Turkoglu - Hakim Warrick - Gani Lawal
C Robin Lopez - Channing Frye - Free Agent

*Suns have expressed need for third point: Zabian Dowdell is most likely candidate
*Suns have expressed need for additional big: Fabricio Oberto, Joe Smith, or Dwayne Collins

---------------------------------------------------------------

Depth Chart 2 (My Own Revised Chart):

G Steve Nash - Goran Dragic - Zabian Dowdell
G Jason Richardson - Jared Dudley - Josh Childress
F Grant Hill - Hedo Turkoglu - Earl Clark
F Hakim Warrick - Joe Smith - Gani Lawal
C Robin Lopez - Channing Frye

*Sign Dowdell to minimum
*Sign Joe Smith to minimum

---------------------------------------------------------------

Analysis:

Depth Chart 1: I am fearing the worst with Hedo at PF, hence why the second roster looks a little more sound. If a front-line of Rasho, Bosh, and Hedo gave up so many points in Toronto, how will Hedo fare at PF alone without those two monster 7-footers? Very scary if you think about it. But looking at it positively, we can all remember how well the much shorter Diaw did in 2005 at PF.

Depth Chart 2: The problem with the second depth chart is that you have 2 small forwards in Hedo and Dudley off the bench while Josh Childress gets paid $33 million to do nothing as third-stringer. But I like the length and depth. You can also switch the starters at SF between Hill and Hedo here.

Curious on what you guys think about next season's depth.

Childress is 6-8 with a huge wingspan. I think he'll play backup SF and Dudley backup SG with LB gone.

Nash, Dragic
J-Rich, Dudley
Hill, Childress, Clark
Hedo, Lawal, Warrick
Lopez, Frye, Warrick

Childress is a good rebounder, who knows we could have him play PF like we did with Marion and put Hedo at SF.

As I mentioned in another thread ... I'm expecting:

Nash/Dragic/???
JRich/Childress
Hill/Dudley
Turk/Warrick/Clark
Lopez/Frye/Lawal

I honestly think our last spot should be a VetMin play-making PG.

I would personally start Dudley if we are to start Turk as a PF mainly because we need the extra ball-handling/creative player with the 2nd unit. We'll have Nash/Turk in the 1st unit.

Either that or we start Warrick/Hill as our forwards and then come in with Dud/Turk with our 2nd unit. I just don't want to see Nash/Turk/Hill start and then have to rely solely on Dragic to create.

The Hawks played Josh at SG. In Europe, he is also known to be a guard. He is quicker than Dudley and hence why he will play SG. Dudley probably won't last guarding those speedy 2-guards in the league.

The only way Dudley plays SG is if both Hedo/Hill play small forward (either Hedo is starting SF or Hill it don't matter).

I think a Jdud/Lopez/Turk frontline would make more sense now.

Jared has a better chance of guarding 4's than Turk in my opinion and this balances the starting 5 a little bit more. This gives Nash 3 deadly shooters from the outside and will also give Lopez all the room he needs to bang inside.

Also this would leave a playmaker to come off the bench in Hill. He could rest a little bit more for a potential playoff run while coming of the bench.

Agree that a vet is needed for that 3rd pg spot. If and when Nash needs some games off they would need a steady hand backing up the Dragon. Someone like Jwill or Anthony Johnson might make sense.

A couple things:

1. I highly doubt Grant Hill comes off the bench. They tried that and he didn't like it. There is some medical reason about his knees needing an early warmup, etc. Also the whole seniority thing and the relationship with his coach/friend Gentry. No way Hill comes off bench for Turk or Duds.

2. Yes, Suns need a third point guard. They will most likely sign their summer leaguer Zabian Dowdell. Coro got some articles about this.

3. Even when they round out the 13-man roster with this third point guard, they STILL need another veteran big man such as Joe Smith or, heck, even Jarron Collins return. Just a solid big man who can point those youngsters the right way.

Scottie Reynolds > Zabian Dowdell. We are not in desperate need of a 3rd pg now, so sign some veteran guy for one year, and see if we can pick up a pg through next year's draft.

Suns have a ton of guys who can handle the ball now (Nash, Dragic, Hill, Hedo). Have a good pesky defender to guard the shooting guards of the league in Josh Childress. And the Suns have a wide variety of guys to use at the PF/C position. I am really looking forward to seeing how this team can do. On paper, they look like a slightly above average team, but if they get the chemistry going then we could be a top team.

Makes no sense to add Turk, while signing Warrick AND Frye. MUST be another deal going down.

They're different players though.

I doubt Warrick is going anywhere and I definitely don't think Frye is going anywhere. Who else could be gone? I think someone else is coming in with the rest of the exception.

I dont think the Suns will need a third point with Turk coming into town. In Orlando, Turk played point a few times.

if turk plays point, he will cause quite a few matchup problems due to his size. I like Turk playing point because it also gives us the ability to go with a big or small lineup.

BIG:

Turk
Childress
Clark
Warrick
Lopez/F.A/Lawal?

SMALL

Dragic
Childress/J-Rich
Dudley
Turk
Lawal

So far. that is what it will be. For all the Hedo can't play the PF, see Orl. Hedo can't guard gasol and Gasol can't guard hedo. We try to beat a team at their own game anyway, you can't do it.

Only other explanation is we're getting ready for after this year when we lose J-Rich and Hill by replacing them in Turk and Childress. THAT I'd be totally down with. Initially though I hated the trade. We still need a real power forward. Not a small forward and a tweener. Here's to hoping Lawal spends most of his time in the D League getting some real experience. If Clark's not getting minutes, I want to see him there too with him

And I'm hoping for Scottie Reynolds as our backup-backup. D-League him up too!
