Thoughts on Jake Long at #1

Post#1 » by OAKTREE NYK1 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 4:47 pm

You guys need to check out Jake Long training for the combine on the ESPN draft section. Dude looks like an absolute beast and for those who doubt his quickness to play left tackle will be in for a nice surprise. I think in the up coming weeks Jake Long becomes the favorite to be a Miami Dolphin. Sparano is an offensive line guy and he knows the key is to surround Beck with plenty of protection. Long on the Left and Carey on the right would make for solid bookend tackles going into the future. I thought about adding Flozell but he may franchised and is also up there in age. When we are ready to compete again we are going to be paying mega millions to an old left tackle. Grab Long at #1 then build from there. It is better to have the money invested in a Left Tackle then it is to pay a guy like Chris Long who may be better served at playing defensive end in a 4-3 or 3-4 OLB. He is the best 4-3 end in this draft but he will be the second best 3-4 OLB (Gholston) so taking him number one would be a stretch.

and even if the management thinks Jake would be a better RT, they could still bring in Flo, line up jake at right tackle, and have carey play a guard spot next to samson.

thats definitely a top 5 offensive line.

Once McShay stated that if the Dolphins cant trade out and they are happy with Beck then Jake Long would be the favorite. I was like no way then it finally clicked. If the Phins cant trade out then he would be hands down the favorite. Our offensive line is not that far away from being a super solid offensive line. If we can add Long we would have Long-Satele-Carey for many many years to come. Add in a veteran if you can at Guard like Faneca to bring them along and Beck should be in to at very leaset prove himself with some actual time to throw the ball. If we can secure the line this year and not have to worry about it for a while then we can move on next year to overhauling the defense. Players like Taylor-Porter and I am sure soon to be converted to OLB in Matt Roth can hold down the outside of the 3-4 until more young players can be drafted to take there places. That's why I think drafting Chris Long is a bit a stretch at #1 since you already have a similar guy in stature in the roster in Matt Roth who many have said coming out of college would be an ideal 3-4 OLB since he played linebacker in his early college years.

Don't plan on Vernon Carey being part of the Dolphins future if you move him back to right tackle. He's a left tackle, and other teams will pay him what he deserves as a left tackle.
For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

I don't know how you can assume a "nice look" with Beck at QB at this point

That is very true.Vernon Carey is a very solid LT and if you move him to RT you will either have to over pay for a RT or Lose him because he will get paid as a LT. Sign F.Adams to play RT(he is getting alil old). Sign a RG and you line is very very good.

Trade the Pick for 2 first or mid first and mid second. Sign Asunte sameul to play opposite of Will allen. Hope Y.Bell and jason allen can hold up your secondary and we are in business. Draft LB and WR,DT

We cant assume that we can sign Flozell as he is going to get mega bucks on the open market. Even if we draft Long we can have him compete with Carey to see who would be the better fit at either Right or Left tackle.

Beck was never given a real chance. Build a strong line around him and then we can judge him.

agreed, but the QB is the biggest question mark on our team and assuming he'll be strong isn't really appropriate.

I never ever mentioned that Beck would be strong. I ment the offense as a whole would be a "nice look" A nice look meaning that it would be something to build upon. Of course we need to bring in a veteran QB or draft one later but if we seal all the other spots then that will be the next focus. I also think Keyshawn Johnson will be playing on the other side of Teddy Ginn next year.

Dont get me wrong I would be real happy with Chris Long over Jake but I just think Jake would make the bigger impact right away. Our defense has plenty of 3-4 OLB with Taylor,Porter,Roth,Abraham Wright, and Moses. The team just released Shelton,Toledo, and Alabi leaving the offensive tackle spot bare. Instead of doubting Long's abilities I would appreciate if the comments where more on the side of this is the pick that I like and this is why I like it. With no clear cut #1 Long-Ryan-C.Long are in the three man race. Out of the three guys whom would you guys take and why?????

Reasons why I wouldnt take

QB Matt Ryan- With a young QB already on the roster and so many other needs on the team I think it would be better served at trying to find a veteran to compete with Beck and see what he can do.If Beck failes in your system then you can look for a future QB next year or draft a project QB in the later rounds like Erick Ainge.

DE Chris Long- at 6'3 275 he is too small to be a down lineman in a 3-4 and might be a bit big to be OLB in the 3-4. If you want a 3-4 OLB in this draft then Gholston would be the pick. With many options already on the roster at 3-4 OLB why would you waste the top overall pick on a player who's position might be better served being a 4-3 DE.

Reasons why I like Jake Long the best

OT Jake Long- Is rated as a top offensive lineman coming out and ranked in the top 3 of many expert boards. They say he is just a notch below Thomas who went #3 last year and a bit above Levi Brown who went top #5. We just released three OT's and I have a young QB on my roster I really want to protect. OT in the free agent market is very tough to find. The success rate of taking a tackle in the top have netted great results other then Gallery of course.

If we cant trade out of the #1 pick I cant see why we dont jump on Jake.

why are people excited about the prospect of Keyshawn (not just you but I see it on other Fins message boards) - he is old and slow and now been out of it for a year. He was a cancer in Tampa (on a winning team no less) and was 3rd fiddle in Dallas behind TO & Glenn. He wasn't that good when he was good.

And please don't pull out "he'll teach the young players how to play" - I think thats one of the more overused cliches in sports. Dwyane Wade is Dorell Wright's best friend, did it make him better on the court these last 4 years?

I am not big on Key either but Pacells has a man crush on him and he knows the system. The team is also void of a veteran guy and since he has ties to Parcells that why is he is rumored to become a Dolphin. The team has nobody to go over the middle to catch the tough ball and that is what Key does best. He is worth a shot I guess looking at the current state of the roster. If he doesnt work out then groom him to be a wideout coach.

why would a guy who has made more than 30 million in his career want to be a wideout coach?

Too be close to the game. Who knows maybe it's his dream to be a coach. Why would a guy when he retires want to be a Sheriff when he has made over 100 million dollars in his career (Sheriff Shaq) HAHAHAHAHA
