No, you have to renounce the whole thing. It's all or nothing.

If the Wolves want to sign Ridnour to a $4M per year deal (or $7M/yr) then they could do so via sign and trade with the Bucks. In that case the Bucks would absorb a $4M TPE and we would keep a $9M TPE.

Since we are under the cap, doesn't the TPE basically turn into cap space?

Correct. Then we are probably sending a 2nd rounder to the bucks too.
If we want to use raw cap space without a S&T, we will have to use the TPE.
I can't see Ridnour signing here without Flynn or Sessions moving first.
I don't see the point anyway with Rubio on the horizon.
Why not a decent vet min backup? There are plenty available.

My understanding was that a team below the cap loses their TPE's. However the TPE is included in first calculating the cap number.

That's where I'm at with this. I've accepted the inevitable boning of the Wolves in a Jefferson deal. I don't want Al to get boned in the process as well. Utah would be a good landing spot for him, better than Dallas would have been.

If we don't salary dump Sessions now, I bet it would be relatively easy to do during the season when someone's PG gets hurt and a team is in desperate need we could salary dump him.

I think Kahn likes the fact that Ridnour has a lot of experience mentoring young point guards and even sharing the same backcourt with them at times (Ridnour played a fair decent amount at SG last year).

I can see why we are waiting to sign Pekovic last.
If we did the Beasley for cap space trade before signing wes and Hayward, we did not have to renounce our MLE since we had 6,253,055 in cap space after taking on Beasley (assuming we have cut stiemsma).

Then if we sign Wes and Hayward, then trade Al for a TPE, we will be at 39,582,205 in salary, leaving us with 18,461,795 in potential cap space, or a 13 mil TPE, and the 5.76 million MLE.

If we then sign Pekovic, using the MLE, we have 43,582,205 in committed salary, leaving us with
14,461,795 in potential cap space, or a 13 mil TPE and 1.76 mil of the MLE.

The TPE is no more valuable to us than the 14.4 million in cap space, at this point, because the value in a TPE really lies in your ability to either maintain your MLE, or take on salary when you are already well above the cap. Neither scenario applies to us since we are well under the cap and forced to use either the MLE on Pekovic, or renounce either the TPE or MLE and use raw cap space to sign him.

At this point we would be just above the minimum team salary.

I think Sessions is better than any of the currently available free agent point guards. It shouldn't be difficult to trade him at all.

Strike that. I forgot about Rubio's cap hold coming off.
If we dump Al and take no Salary back, on the first day of the season our committed Salary will be 40,770,005. Cap Room would be 17,273,995.
The minimum team salary will be 43,533,000, and Taylor would have to make up the difference to the players as a "Tax". Of course, he could take on contracts for picks at the deadline.

It also may explain the Ridnour interest. Maybe he is looking for a value signing he can spin off in the long term, ala Sessions last year.

That may be it, especially if he moves Hollins as well.

Sessions shared a backcourt with Ridnour at times the year before, and tended to play SG in that lineup. We went through that angle of the discussion last year, I don't think we'd see Ridnour and Flynn play together much more than we saw Sessions and Flynn play together.

As for Ridnour's mentoring ability, if that's the case then it would seem awfully knee jerk.

I get the Ridnour fits the system better angle, that's one of the excuses the Bucks used when keeping him instead of Sessions last year.

Whether it ends up being a decent move or not would depend on Ridnour's ability to come close to repeating his career best shooting performance from last year.

Do you think DAL fans that were saying Cuban should balk over using Dampier are still as confident about their chances getting past the Lakers and Heat now that it looks like Al will be going to Utah?

I'm not sure they should have been confident about those chances even with Al, but that type of internet standoffishness does add to why I would rather see him end up with Utah.

they feel they can get Chris Paul it seems :dontknow: Personally I don't think they have anywhere near the assets. For some reason Dallas keeps getting thrown into rumors out of their league. Like the Lebron thing, like Dallas was a sleeper in the Lebron race? What were the odds Cleveland ever in a billion years agrees to a s&t for Dampier, Beaubois and 2 firsts? And that was before we saw how vindictive and insane Dan Gilbert is. Now there's CP3 hype, but again, is there any way New Orleans trades CP3 for Beaubois and financial flexibility? Isn't that like trading your 2.5 million dollar mansion for a $49,000 house in the ghetto to save money on property taxes?

I guess we can look at this as payback to Dallas for when we were about to acquire Van Exel and Cuban said they'd take on LaFrentz albatross contract as well and we got left out.

Dallas really should've taken the deal they had, rather than hold out for the one that has no chance of happening.

With a new billionaire owner (Chouest) stepping in to buy the Hornets, I doubt his first move will be to move Chris Paul. I need to hear some mroe recent news though - I thought Shinn would have sold by now.

Anyway, I thought this post from a decent DAL poster was telling.

Deep down, I never really thought that Lebron or Wade would come to Dallas, but I thought Dampier would get us a low post player such as Jefferson or Kaman or Nene or Bosh or something along those lines. And it should have. It was right there with Jefferson. But our cheap ass owner who has a rep for not being cheap decided $14 mil/yr for a young 20/10 guy was too steep of an asking price.

Mark Cuban, who had his team $18 mil over the lux last year, is being called a "cheap ass" by fans?

He might not be cheap in an overall sense, but he is cheap when it matters most (see, e.g., Nash, Steve)
