Wolves top three FO blunders of the last ten years

Post#1 » by TrentTuckerForever » Wed Jul 14, 2010 3:23 pm

Inspired by a Carpe Deim post in the "what did we get for KG thread":

Carpe Diem wrote:The two colossal blunders this franchise made during the KG era was the Joe Smith fiasco that cost us all of those #1's. The ramifications of that are just now being resolved. The second was the Foye for Roy swap. KG would still be in 'Sota had that not occurred.

Give us your top three Wolves Front Office Blunders of the last ten years. Maybe it will shed some light on Kahn's performance so far, put it in a little more context. Mine would be:

3) Marco Jaric trade (2005). Cassell and a future #1 (still not paid) for Jaric and Jaric's hot girlfriend. She's the only reason this trade isn't ranked higher.
2) The Smith deal (2001). The loss of draft picks is well documented, but also lost was a year of KG's prime while the Wolves marked time as a good-but-not-great team in the West.
1) Foye for Roy (2006). Sigh.

To watch in the future - Johnson over Cousins MIGHT be a colossal mistake. The Wolves had the 4th pick in what was considered a 4 player draft (at least in the top two tiers - Wall, then Favors, Cousins and Turner.) Only time will tell.

I don't think that we need to wait for time to tell us how bad a decision this was. Nothing about Johnson makes him worthy of a top 5 pick, and the supposed concerns about DMC's character are laughable now that Beasley is here. This is made even worse by how deep this draft was on the wings, particularly with guys who are quite a bit like Johnson, as well has how much easier in general it is to find wing players with Johnson's skill set vs. bigs with Cousin's skill set. Of course the idea is that Johnson will be Brewer's replacement (as he surely will be gone) and he fits the "system" of having a team filled with role players.

Yikes steve, I apologize. I'll get you a full refund for your purchase price.

If you don't like the idea don't post. It's not a "what if" thread, just a line of thinking that came of the Jefferson move. I don't think this summer's moves have been bad at all, especially in the context of what we've put up with in the past as Wolves fans.

Think of it as a way of educating the Kahn bashers. Context is a good thing.

I just don't see the point in arguing "which is worse: ndudi ebi or foye for roy?" Though you lay out your argument nicely, the subject matter seems like it belongs in RubeChat or Strib boards. Just one man's opinion...

Maybe it makes sense to counter this thread with "Positivity II" or something?

Then don't argue it. I'm not sure why we should be afraid of discussing prior negative moves.

Yeah those are pretty terrible. My god, nothing more annoying than adding that 1st with Cassell. There had to been better deals out there.

I look forward to the day that the Wolves are no longer defined by their FO blunders, but by their on-court successes.

I hate looking back and judging a rumor/transaction. So draft day stuff is tough. Our medical staff believed that Roy had knee issues. It was a terrible draft but we went with our medical understanding. Tough call.

The Joe Smith situation and the Jaric trade is the worst moves.

We had a chance to move Googs for Eddie Jones and Campbell but we turned it down because we did not want to deal with the lakers. Googs then leaves to phx for nothing.

Letting Chauncey Billups walk was quite a blunder. Him and KG were quite close too. They were at my Highschool graduation ceremony together.

Another medical blunder. McHale would not promise Billups the starting role not realizing that TB's injury was career ending.
