INDIANAPOLIS -- The first piece of the Bears' free-agent puzzle should be delivered soon as a contract for Rex Grossman is imminent.
The team is expected to reach an agreement to retain the quarterback, perhaps today, after negotiations on a new deal carried late into the evening Friday.
General manager Jerry Angelo met with agent Eugene Parker in the morning and they huddled again throughout the evening working on details of a contract that would bring the first-round pick from 2003 back for what has been said will be a quarterback competition involving Kyle Orton. A source said it will be a one- or two-year deal and includes incentives based on playing time and performance. Re-signing Grossman was one of the organization's top goals when it arrived at the combine Wednesday.
Grossman, who helped the team to Super Bowl XLI the season before, was erratic in the first three games of 2007 before being benched. He was reinserted at Oakland Nov. 11, replacing Brian Griese, and was more consistent before being lost to a minor knee sprain Dec. 6 at Washington. Returning to the Bears provides Grossman with his best opportunity to play in 2008 despite the turbulent experiences and intense scrutiny he has faced. He's said he wants to return.

Not like I'm psyched about Grossman, but it would have been very hard to impossible to get anyone better this year.

Associated Press - Rex Grossman signed a one-year contract Saturday with the Bears and will compete for the starting QB job, according to an Associated Press report.
Grossman started the Super Bowl for the Bears after an up-and-down season in 2006. He struggled again last year and was benched following the third game. He returned for five more games before injuring his left knee in early December.

Won't happen.
He only threw one in his last 136 pass attempts before he got injured.
I don't know if it will last, but if it does, he'll have a good season next year. I really saw him play differently in those 4 games he played after Griese got injured.

the real worries are the OLINE and the RUN GAME and our RECEIVING CORE. if th oline wont protect, grossman's chances of completing a pass is not that good, nor will Benson/?? get more than 2 yards. our Receivers is Berrian decides not to come back, will be Hass Bradley Hester, R.Davis? these guys aren;t proven players, but i like their potential, especially Bradleys, but IT ALL STARTS AT THE TRENCHES.

I don't think Grossman is that bad.
Our problems start with the fact that we have an awful offensive line, an awful running back, and one of the worst WR core's in the NFL.
I think Grossman is actually more than capable of being an average or maybe slightly above average NFL QB, but even Tom Brady would look like crap if he was on the Bears.
You have to have something around him to work with. Our receivers drop balls, our running game is pathetic, and our QB has no time to throw. It'd be great to solve the QB problem, because it's the most important position in the NFL, however, even if you had the solution on the roster you'd never know it if he has to work in the environment we currently have set up.
