Re: OT: Earthquake?
I was half asleep and assumed it was part of a nightmare I was having - very surprised to find out there was an actual earthquake. And I live right near where it was centered - in Gaithersburg.

I remember when I lived in the area, roughly 20 years ago, we had a mild earthquake. I believe the center was around Laurel.

Re: OT: Earthquake?
Quakes are scary. Two years ago, I experienced two big quakes in the span of one month. One was a 7.1 at the epicenter, the other a 6.8, although where I lived they both measured 5.8.

Same here. I thought the used bed frame that I purchased on Craig's List had broken and the shaking was me bouncing on the mattress. When I saw that wasn't it, I figured I had been dreaming and just went back to sleep. It wasn't until I got up and checked MSN.com that I saw it was an actual earthquake.

Yeah, I remember that. I lived in southern PG at the time so I didn't feel anything but IIRC it was reportedly even stronger than the one this morning.

Re: OT: Earthquake?
It's just God's way of showing you the end is near. No need to panic or anything.
Seriously, (I was being half serious), we had a 6.7 earthquake in the Hawaiian islands back in 2006. Happened real early on a Sunday morning. I knew right away what it was but for whatever reason it didn't scare me. I went out and started driving around. Way after the earthquake power went out on the island and it stayed out all day.
What really struck me is that the earthquake cancelled church worship service. Naive me thought folks would really go to church after that, but apparently the concern was safety. I didn't understand that because I'd been up and down half of Oahu, just fascinated that a quake that big had just happened.
I don't think anybody died. To me that was a miracle.

Re: OT: Earthquake?
The big thing with Earthquakes and being scary is how built up is the area you're in is and what the construction is like.
I've been in a fairly respectable earthquake in an environment with only single story buildings and you pretty well realize that the worst thing that's going to happen is that you're going to fall out of your chair. Well, especially considering that I was only renting.
It's entirely different if you're at the top of a 12 story building in a place known for low quality construction standards.

Re: OT: Earthquake?
I slept right through it and I'm only a few miles from the center of the earthquake.
I am Scabs.
