Gleanings from the Combine: player movement edition

Post#1 » by Icness » Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:50 pm

Player movement stuff from the Combine

Some of this is nothing new, some of this is bound not to happen, some of this is just agents angling for their clients (see Drew Rosenhaus and his clientele). But this is what a gathered out of Indy. I spent much more time there this year focusing on the collegians and how the teams are looking at them, so I don't have anything breaking like when I was the first to announce the LeCharles Bentley, Adam Vinatieiri, and Antwan Randle El signings.

Shaun Rogers should be a Denver Bronco by the end of tomorrow if not sooner. Millen & Co. are keeping the details very close to the vest but I've heard it's Rogers for a 2nd and 5th rounder. New Orleans offered Jason David straight up, and that makes more sense to me as a Lions fan given that the Lions have one CB on the roster right now, plus the salaries are pretty close. DET cut Fernando Bryant yesterday--expect him to wind up in either New England or Kansas City.

Odds are "very strong" the Lions sign CB Brian Kelly, who "worships" Rod Marinelli. I know he is their top free agent target, but that Millen is willing to shell out for bigger names if he thinks they're serious (read: Samuel and Turner)

Asante Samuel: the frontrunner is New Orleans, but they aren't offering the length he's seeking. I'm told the only other serious candidates are Detroit, Dallas, and Tampa Bay, but that Parcells hasn't ruled out making an aggressive offer either.

Lance Briggs really wants to go to SF but Rosenhaus is more than a little worried about the tampering charge the Bears filed against him. Apparently Rosenhaus worked out a deal with the 49ers while Briggs was still playing for the Bears--which is highly illegal but not highly irregular. San Diego was set to offer him big $$ but found a cheaper alternate in Derek Smith, who is much less threatening to Merriman's ginormous ego.

Michael Turner and the Bears keep running hot and cold, depending on who you ask. Just a semi-informed guess, but I think he's going somewhere else, maybe Atlanta. Atlanta is very much in the free agent RB market and they were real upset that the Jaguars locked up Greg Jones. Tying into the draft for you Falcons fans: their draft board, in order:
1. Matt Ryan 2. Jake Long 3. Glenn Dorsey 4. Chris Long 5. Ryan Clady
They will not move any lower than where they can still get any of those guys, which is looking like 7 or 8. McFadden's character issues (he's impregnated two more women and not avoiding trouble very well) have ensured he will not be a Falcon.

The Browns and Derek Anderson essentially have a deal but Anderson's people want better trade escalators. Which makes sense, because he's almost certain to be dealt by the start of the 09 season--Phil Savage loves Brady Quinn and spent a great deal to get him and wants return on that investment.

Deshaun Foster wants to go to Houston but they're not keen on injury-prone guys with all the injury issues they already have. I also heard to not expect Dunta Robinson on the field in 2008--the Texans are planning on not having him and if he comes back, all the better. He didn't just tear ligaments, he completely shredded them.

No word on Faneca other than the widely available stuff. Sorry. My guess is still Arizona or Kansas City, in that order.

Miami is going to sign lots of castoffs on the cheap, primarily one or two year deals with lots of incentives. Guys like Boss Bailey, Jeb Putzier, Shawn Barber. From what I've heard all the talk about Bobby Carpenter is coming from Dallas, not Miami.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

Troy Williamson was traded to the Jaguars for a 6th round pick. Also I have heard the Jags are interested in trading for Jonathan Vilma or Jason Taylor. From the free agent standpoint, the Jags are looking at Gibril Wilson for their strong safety vacancy.

How many kids McFadden has? I lost count. 2 already from 2 different women and he knocked up 2 more? Records are meant to be broken I guess.
First the federal government borrowed money; then gave the money to Bank of America; then I borrowed some of that money from Bank of America and gave it to the federal government; then the federal government gave the money back to Bank of America.

On the wiretap it says Moss to Dallas being a possibility. Now, why would the wiretap writers put that on there? Moss and Owens both have to be the primary wr or they get angry. That would never work.

So wait, we offered Jason David for Shaun Rogers.... and it makes sense?? Did anyone see Jasin David this year? He'll force a few turnovers, but wow does he get toasted by everyone. I guess back in a tampa 2 system he will be able to play zone.... which he played for us, though he was supposed to be playing the receiver man up.

Lets get Shaun Rogers, Vilma, and Asante, and I'd feel pretty good coming into next season :D

the eagles secondary would be crazy good if they landed asante, honestly dont see why'd they'd shell out top dollar for him

if i was a team id much rather go after randall gay b/c he'll be so much cheaper then samuel and cant be that much worse then him.

I agree, I never thought CB was our biggest concern because I have always been a big fan of Lito Sheppard and really do believe he is a very underrated CB. But he always had injury concerns.

I would like to keep Lito and Asante and maybe move Brown as Safety. and maybe nickel as well.

What I understand, Lito will be used as trade bait *cough* Larry Fitz *Cough*

I want to know if there is any truth to these rumours.
