Damn figured there would be some kind of penalty but not a season long one.

Wow, been fun Johnny. Didn't expect season long, at least not this soon.

Opens the door for Justin Harrell to become defensive comeback player of the year, yeeeeeeeeeah!

This has to be for more than just the codeine.

Outrageous. Really. Suspended for the full 2010 season, and indefinitely beyond? You've got to be kidding me.

Wait...what is that I hear? A faint sound in the distance...sounds like "Appeal."

The NFL clearly has to know something considering the trial hasn't even finished and there is no plea deal in place.

I was expecting maybe a 4-6 game suspension.

There is clearly more going on that hasn't come out yet.

Seems premature to suspend him before trial verdict. Is sipping purple drank that much worse than what Big Ben has done? Must be more than meets the eye, but seems like they're treating him guilty until proven innocent rather than the other way around. Not saying he's innocent, but the NFL is acting above the law at this point.

Bedard made a point that probably has merit:

Greg_A_Bedard Figured the rise in profile of Purple Drank -- you can thank JaMarcus Russell for that -- factored in. NFL sent a message.

I believe that.

But still, a year is way too much, even if he is guilty of what he's been accused of. There has to be more. Because if this is just Goodell sending a message and making an example of Jollay, that's bull.

Via PFT

Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that court records indicate an intention by prosecutors to attempt to prove at trial that Johnny "bought, sold, funded, transported and aided in the buying, selling, funding and transportation of illegal narcotics including cocaine and marijuana" from 2006 through May 2008.

Uhh, I guess the suspension makes sense.

Happy trails, Jolly.

This suspension is for Substance Abuse, such as failing a drug test. A one year suspension is usually a third strike violation of the substance abuse program. His drug trial stuff would fall under the personal conduct policy. So there could be more time tacked on after the trial.
Trade S. Jackson soon. NJ seems like a nice place for him.

What a d-bag Jolly is. Great player but you get rid of him. I don't want to cheer for players like this,or put there selfs in this situation.

It's not really that simple. Being born and raised in a horrible neighborhood isn't 'putting himself in that situation' nor is it necessarily easy to sever ties with those you grew up with. That doesn't excuse Jolly's actions by any means, but I wouldn't wish his childhood on anyone.

No, that's not what that says. It says that the prosecutors were attempting to prove that. Big, big difference.

I still don't like the NFL's precedent of suspending players before they're convicted at trial. Suppose Jolly walks or pleads it down to a lesser crime...doesn't that make the suspension premature?

Granted, the NFL isn't the justice system, and they have they own rules and regulations. However, too much of this sounds like guilty till proven innocent, and I have a problem with that.

The NFL suspended him for substance abuse, this has nothing to do with his trial, he could receive additional suspensions based on the outcome of the trial.

Has he had two previous substance abuse violations? I thought you only get a year ban after three.

I thought this fell under the personal conduct policy.

I don't remember him having any suspensions for failed tests. This is PCP I believe.

You can get a year ban if you are in the stage 3 substance abuse monitoring program or something like that. I'm not sure what exactly it is called or how you get in there but apparently Jolly was and that is why he can get a year suspension. I don't know if it is because he has been in trouble for substance abuse before that didn't result in a ban but resulted in more testing or what the details are, we may never know because I don't believe they make that information public.
