Depth vs Top Heavy

Post#1 » by WTFsunsFTW » Fri Jul 16, 2010 9:50 pm

Lots of articles out recently about how the Suns are stacking their roster full of depth in lieu of losing out on their star player.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/4207 ... star-power

http://www.nba.com/2010/news/features/s ... ef:nbahpt1

http://arizona.sbnation.com/2010/7/14/1 ... free-agent

http://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2010/ ... ake-up-for

http://phoenix.fanster.com/2010/07/15/p ... ing-amare/

What are your thoughts? Are you looking forward to seeing a box score with 10-12 players getting minutes? Or are you going to miss the 49 point games of a dominant allstar?

They averaged close to 120ppg when Amare went down with the eye injury, even though that was with Shaq and Barbosa who equalled like 27 points per game, they replaced them with guys like Frye/Warrick/Childress/Hedo who add up to around 45 points per game. Going to be a fun team to watch next year.

I think there will be some bitching about playing team even though our players don't seem like they would. If someone gets injured we'll be fine depth wise. I can see minutes breaking down like...

Turk - 35
Nash - 32
J-Rich - 31
Frye - 30
Lopez - 25
Dudley - 25
DRAGON - 20
Hill - 20
Childress - 20
Warrick - 10
Lawal/Clark/Reynolds - Barely any

Nash still runs the show but Hedo is the closer...

Eh sorry i though i put him down w/ Hill and JC for 20. He averaged 18 last season so 20 is a safe bet assuming Nash plays less. Probably even more if we rest Nash for a few games like we did with Shaq. With the stack of guards i don't see em playing together like last year.

This is how I expect the mins to be dished out:

2010/11

PG - Nash: 28, Dragic: 20
SG - JRich: 32, Chill: 16 (19 overall)
SF - Hill: 25, Dud: 20, Chill: 3
PF - Turk: 28, Warrick: 20
C - Lopez: 23, Frye: 25

When/IF we get injuries the following will fill in:

C/PF - Lawal
F - Clark
PG - Reynolds (assuming we get him)

2011/12

PG - Nash: 28, Dragic: 15 (25 overall), Reynolds: 5
SG - Chill:30, Dud: 8 (26 overall), Dragic: 10
SF - Turk: 30, Dud: 18
PF - Warrick: 28, Clark: 13, Lawal: 7
C - Lopez: 23, Frye: 25

(Assuming JRich/Hill don't come back and we don't sign any free agents or make any trades)

We are possibly too deep as evidenced by quite a few good players get less mins than what they should and the fact that our 3 youngsters will most likely only get mins in the DLg and if someone gets injured.

I think Chill will play less mins until we offload JRich, then he will see closer to 25-28mins. Likewise with Dudley. I think we won't play him too much so that his value doesn't get too high prior to his contract needs extending. But in the following season I can see his mins going up to 25-28 as well.

Warrick is in the same boat as well. You had Gentry saying he'll get more mins than prev in his career but I think that's gonna happen more the following season rather than next season.

RE: 2011/12 - This is why I like the trades we've made. Look at that team and altho it's not going to win a title, keep in mind how much we will be paying those guys. We should be well under the Lux Tax with a MLE and TPE in hand. We would be in a very good position to make a play for a great player (using mulitple contracts) and then sign 2 players around the MLE to add depth.

Looking at a break down like this, it makes the Warrick signing even more strange. Those minutes could have been given to Lawal/Clark easily, as off the bench spot minutes. It will also be interesting to see if Dragic gets some time at SG, and how he handles that.

Glad to see MVF so enthusiastic about this new-look Suns team.

Honestly, the Warrick signing is probably the most mind boggling and if someone has to miss out on minutes I think it should be him.
I don't think any one player on the Suns team should be getting more than 30 minutes in a game, unless they catch hot-fire.

Yeah i'd rather just re-sign Lou i think he's a better player anyway than Warrick. I don't see Drags getting too much time next year at SG but in 2 years when J-Rich is gone who knows he could start there. He's a score-first PG with decent size and D so who knows. A lot probably depends on Scottie as well.

I think Warrick is the all-around better player, but I'd rather have Lou since he was fine with his role on the team, and he wasn't afraid to back down from anyone (ask Zach Randolph), the team chemistry was already there with Amundson too.

When I first saw Top Heavy I thought you meant Oliver Miller was coming back to join the Suns.

^^^ Jawai is about that big. Saw him on TV here in an "international" match against Argentina C side and couldn't believe how huge *cough* fat *cough* he was. Looked like he doesn't train daily/regularly. I was surprised how mobile he was considering his weight/height.

Still remember when someone asked Barkley if Miller could dunk he said "if you put a burger up on the rim he could" or something like that.

Haha yeah Jawai seemed huge against that Argentina team, but the Argentina team wasn't that big at all so maybe that's what made him look so big.

Depth is very nice, but you don't win championships unless you have at least 2 stars, play defense and rebound. It's one thing to lose a star like Amare, but to then replace him with a ton of guys who don't play defense or rebound, is just insanely stupid. We were already loaded, now it's just like a freak show. D'antoni didn't even attempt to go deep, and now Gentry will go at least 10+ deep.

Instead of all the new signed players we got, I'd rather use that money to go after someone that can keep up with the team on offense (and not necessarily demand the ball), but most importantly excel at rebounding and defense.
