If the Nets are in the tank again come midseason, why not get a HUGE expiring contract, sign AK back on a discount next year for the Russian fans back home (and that owner is absolutely capable of doing it for solely that reason), and then be a player in FA again next year?

Billy King and Kevin O'Connor are preferred trading partners as is (Kyle Korver). I think it's got a chance to go somewhere if the Nets are terrible again.

Miller has said that he is willing to pay the lux tax, I'm going to take his word on that.
I don't see why anybody would want to trade a player like AK.
The smart thing to do is to lock him up with a reasonable contract.
Here is where I think most posters miss the bus, Miller understands that a contending team that makes a decent run in the playoffs makes up for the lux tax hit.
On the other hand a crappy team that doesn't make the playoffs, doesn't make any money and has unhappy fans.
I think he is willing to gamble that the Jazz are good enough to make up the difference, and keeping the fans happy is huge.
Keeping a player as unique as AK goes a long way keeping the team in the upper crust.

I agree it would be best to keep him and let it expire, but teams most definitely clamor for expirings, every single year.
