Re: Bill Simmons believes Cavs should trade for Arenas
i think the Cavs should too..
they need to get try and replace the scoring they lost with the depature of Lebron and they can get Gilbert for practically nothing. they would pretty much just be the wizards minus Caron Butler tho lol

Thats a great trade for washington. they get out of one of the most crippling contracts in the league and free up time for wall. i hope cleveland is stupid enough to do that trade.

Wall doesn't need to have time freed up.
He's the starting PG regardless of Gil's circumstances.

Honestly, my first reaction is that this is a great idea.
It's one thing to say that Arenas isn't going to lead the Cavs to a title, but realistically they're not going to be winning a title any time soon, might as well acquire a Top 10 talent at a bargain price and generate some excitement.
For Washington, don't know if that's enough for them to pull the trigger, but if I'm running the Wizards, I'm certainly looking to trade Arenas soon even though I know I won't get full value for him. It's just so hard to imagine that Arenas is going to be a valuable sidekick if and when Wall is leading the team toward championship contention - and he's sure as hell not the guy you want to act as mentor in the formative years.

If a team would trade for Hedo, someone would trade for Arenas.

You know what's funny. For as bad as everybody makes Gil's contract out to be, there sure are a lot of people making threads willing to do us a "favor" by taking him off our hands. Then we are ungrateful when we balk at it. Too cute. Oh yeah, let's get Gil as far away from Wall as possible and bring in the guy who rides around with sawed off shotguns in a guitar case desperado style.

He would be cut. Only $500k of his contract is guaranteed.

I'd be worried about Delonte trying to hook up with JMG's mom

The Cavs should simply offer Hickson or Varejao + filler to Washington for Arenas.

He has one of the worst contract in the league and that was true even when he was healthy. If the Wiz could actually trade him for expiring contracts they would be far better off in the future. This isn't about getting equal value for a player. It's about clearing cap room to make better moves in the future.
Have you ever heard of never selling at your lowest. Right now Arenas' value is the lowest its ever going to be. If he comes out and puts up 22-28 ppg and 4-6 asg then a team in need of a scoring guard will bite on him. The gun situation will be forgotten just like kobes rape situation.

If the team had not gotten a guy they thought was a future superstar, the obvious thing to do would have been to put Arenas right back in his old role, and look to trade him once he proved himself. Now the question is this: How's Arenas likely to do on a team where he's not only not the focal point, but the focal point is a guy who plays in the same position as Arenas? If there's a strong chance that Arenas isn't going to be able to impress in that secondary role, they're probably better off trading sooner than later.

Uh, no way in hell do we give up our two best trade assets for a guy with baggage who hasn't proven himself to be the player he once was.
I think it might be worth a shot for us to try to get him, but not if we have to give up Hickson or Varejao. Basically, we only get him if Wash is looking to unload his contract.
If he's healthy, he definitely has the talent to draw in fans, and he's always been a likable, goofy personality...so he could be a guy that Cavs fans rally around, and get us thinking positively instead of all anti-LeBron all season.
He could be a great short term fix or a bit longer, but if we really want to build a championship team, I don't consider Arenas a championship level player, and we'd be better off freeing up cap space.

Anderson Varejao
JJ Hickson, Leon Powe
Antawn Jamison, Christian Eyenga
Gilbert Arenas, Anthony Parker
Mo Williams, Sebastian Telfair
could be worse...

They should've done this before Lebron left. Trade Mo + West (Mo gets flipped to a 3rd team) and the Cavs get Gil. Lebron needs someone who's clutch and can create his own shot. Not to beat a dead horse but i think he would've stayed.

Can't they just play together?
Wall pg, Arenas sg, Kirk combo back up
pretty solid guard rotation imo

Sure, Gil made a mistake. Yes, his contract certainly hasn't been justified to this point, but I would have no problem with Gil mentoring Wall.
Wall has a good enough head on his shoulders to not become a prankster like Gil, Wall is going to lead by example regardless. If he picks up Gil's amazing work ethic and desire to constantly work on his game, then I'd be extatic.
No way the Wiz touch this trade with a 10 foot pole.

Why wouldn't we just go after Monta? He is younger, better, and does not try to cap his teammates

There's only 1 basketball, and only 1 guy can be the guy with the ball in his hands most of the time. For Arenas' entire career that's been him. Now it will be Wall. Arenas will have to adjust to a different role - and if he struggles, his market value goes down, and if he pouts, his market value falls off a cliff. On top of all that, there's the matter than in the long term, the last thing you want to do when building around Wall is have his #2 guy be too old to matter when Wall actually gets really good.
I'm not saying it can't work out to Washington's benefit to keep him for a while, but I would be absolutely stunned if their management's only question was not WHEN to trade Arenas, not IF. And the moment they get a decent offer, WHEN becomes now.

If the Wiz could get rid of Arenas they should. Washington couldn't take another chance of him getting injured. If that happened they be stuck with a 4 year anchor on there franchise.
