Gregg needs to go ASAP

Post#1 » by Griff83 » Sun Jul 18, 2010 1:58 am

Gives Cito the stink eye and starts yapping at him for getting pulled.
Was absolutely the correct move with Gregg walking three guys in the inning to load the base's.
Gregg is a bum. Get rid of him before he costs us more games in the 9th inning.

Yep
when cito was walking to the mound you could see Gregg say " you gotta be **** kidding me" then when he walked off the mound he looked back at Cito and started yapping.

Didn't see it, but if there was insubordination, he should be suspended by AA.

Damnit Gregg, you are just hurting your trade value with crap like this!!

I'd expect that reaction from several closers in a situation where you are pulled with the save still in tact.

So your saying its basically acceptable for a player to show up his manager like that?

The guy has just walked the bases LOADED!

Cito made the correct call and Gregg is a little baby for complaining.

A) I never said he didn't make the right call. It was the right call. However, that is a reaction I'd expect from several closers. Furthermore, if you've seen Gregg at all you would have noticed by now that he's got a temper. AA knows it and so does Cito, so this type of reaction isn't going to change anything...in fact, Cito has already made it clear that Gregg's position as closer is still in tact. As questionable as Cito is, he's been a manger long enough to know that that type of reaction isn't disrespect from Gregg...its a simply case where he felt he got screwed and then wasn't given the chance to fix his own mistake.

B) He was getting squeezed...again. The walks aren't acceptable, but he threw about 3 pitches that were closer to being strikes than the first called strike that Camp got. We've seen this before: he gets squeezed, gets angry, then implodes.

Simmer down, man.

Yeah, Gregg shouldn't have done what he did, but that doesn't mean there's any reason to get rid of him (unless it's in a trade where we get fair value back, of course).

Cito's comments on it:
Cito: "I don't blame him. He's not happy but he walked three guys, so I figured that was enough for him and I took him out of the ballgame. I spoke with [Gregg]. I think we straightened things out. He disagreed that I took him out, but that's my job. I'm the manager. I'm still happy. We won a ballgame. I'm not sure about him, but I'm happy.

If Cito can move past it, I'm sure you can. I'm sure you all remember when John Gibbons actually fought Ted Lilly in the walkway and Ted still made his next start like nothing happened. That's what should happen here.

Gregg should be thankful Cito still lets him pitch on back to back nights. He's consistently bad on the 2nd day.

Gregg when his temper acts up, tends to lose control, both of pitches and his temperament. It's pretty easy to see that he's not a closer because closers battle through those things like that. He'd be an ideal setup guy, but he's being used in the wrong situation in Toronto.

With the lead still in tact and the save still there, I'd expect that reaction from any closer in the league if there was only one out left in the game. But really, Gregg deserves to get yanked like that as a wake up call, cool it, or you're gone essentially.

Here's Gregg tonight...notice the three called balls, all which were clearly strikes?

Now here's Camp; look at where the ball was that he got a strike call on:

MetA4, that could as easily be the ump giving extra on the left side of the plate but making up for it on the right. I was out, and would need to see the whole game's data to be sure, but if so, you've got to notice that and adjust.

They were clear strikes. An umpire shouldn't be "moving" the zone around. It should be noted that Escobar got a ridiculous strike called against him on the same sad Gregg was getting squeezed just an inning earlier. That pitch against Escobar wasn't anywhere near as close to being as strike as either 3 of Gregg's "balls".

Sure, they shouldn't be, but they do. Every ump has got their own zone, and you should adjust to it. But if he wasn't being consistent in the game, then that is a different issue.

If this very issue was not the problem with Gregg, you'd probably let him finish... but seeing as he walks guys all the time, he hasn't earned the right to stay out there and try and finish it off. That's my take on it. Especially so seeing as it's his 2nd day. We already know how that turns out.

In regards to the umpiring, yea they where strikes for sure, but again when you have that reputation, sometimes you dont get the breaks, and tonight he didn't, and ya gotta move on.

Why would anyone want him gone? We're on a 10yr plan to compete. None of these players will be around by the time we're contending.

If it was Gibbons he would have chased Gregg into the dugout hallway and tried to fight him.
