a move that appears to be salary-cap related, the Patriots are expected to release outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin today, according to a league source.

Colvin, a marquee free-agent signing in 2002, was scheduled to count $7.6 million against the salary cap and earn a base salary of $5.5 million. The 2008 season was the final year of his contract.

Kind of surprising given the current LB status of this team but this does open up some cap space for Moss I guess

I think our defense was clearly worse after Colvin went down last year. For that reason the move is a little bit surprising, although, I am not sure I ever expected the Pats to absorb his cap hit . We bet get at least one quality lb in this draft.

Of course I forgot the guy who played the best last season. :\

Seriously though... I'm thinking that the management must have a good plan in the draft or FA market in terms of getting a solid LB if they're willing to just get rid of Colvin.

Pierre Woods? Really? Just seems like a special teams guy. I don't want him as a 3-down OLB. That would be pretty horrible if Pierre Woods took over Roosevelt Colvin's job.

Which is good, thats fine. I like Pierre Woods heart, and effort on special teams, that I want him on this team. But like Banta-Cain, he is not a starting LB. I hope he proves me wrong though, because we are pretty damn thin at that position.

I would guess that the Patriots resign him for 2-3 million a year for 3 years unless he gets a bigger deal elsewhere. Colvin just isn't worth 8 million and this is a good business move.

Also, with Vrabel and Thomas at OL, Colvin isn't as valuable. Thomas wasn't the inside linebacker we had hoped. Perhaps Zach Thomas will be the guy we target.

well i wasnt suggesting he would step in for colvin easily, but thats where you look at his body of work, and hes clearly come to be preferred/more effective than eric alexander. i think pierre ends up better than tully. the fact that they told shawn crable in his interview that if he was to come here woods is the guy he would have to attach himself to is something that i think speaks volumes about him and what they think he may be able to do.

that being said, while i do believe the ideal would be to move AD outside full time, i think were more likely to find an outside backer than an ILB, and will heavily argue with anyone who says AD was a disappointment
