OT: Next month I move to Bloomington

Post#1 » by Cigamodnalro » Sun Jul 18, 2010 4:13 am

Currently a resident of Orlando FL....

Fill me in---what are the good hang out spots? Bars? Cheap restaurants? Any insider information about the campus or town?

Essentially, you can't go wrong anywhere.

The traditional hang out is Nick's English Hut. Restaurant, bar, local gathering spot, etc. Other bars rotate in and out, but another great one is the Bluebird, if you like live music. Great hangout bar and great bands.

Gosh, so many great memories are running through my head of my time in Bloomington. There's just no bad spots. Has great ethnic and locally owned restarants everywhere.

Nick's as mentioned above is easily my favorite place to go. If you are planning on attending football games, tailgating is a must. Like Scoot said, anywhere and everywhere is pretty much a can't miss. So you should be good.

How old are you? Kirkwood is a great place to go, although it is always crowded. Not such a great place to hang out if you're under 21, either...even if you don't drink, the bars are pretty much where everyone hangs out.

This fall will be my third year living in Bloomington... I will be a 5th year senior working towards my bachelor's degree... to answer your question, where do I begin?

The bar scene is top notch. As mentioned, Nick's is great... if you go there you must play Sink the Biz. Brother's and Kilroy's on Kirkwood are fun on certain days. If your'e into the club scene, Kilroy's Sports is a good time late night.

There are a lot of good local restaurants that you must try also.

You have to tailgate during football season, as most students are concerned with that rather than the football game itself. One hell of a time. And basketball games are fun, and they can only get better as the team improves each year.

The best part for me is being an hour from Indy. I can go to Pacers games seemingly whenever I want, not to mention most every game is televised on Fox Sports Midwest.

I've got multiple friends that went to IU so I've been down to Bloomington several times. The Aforementioned Nicks & Kilroys are nice places. Kilroys has daily (I believe) happy hours that last a good portion of the day and you can get wings & pitchers for super cheap. It's usually pretty chill this time of day and gets super crowded at night. Sink the biz is a fun drinking game that isn't too convoluted. Sports is place to check out, it's pretty big. It seems to attract douchey people, though. I went to Brothers a few times as well, but mostly there I just smoked in the upstairs patio.

There is a lot of great food places, especially a few pizza places that I don't recall the name of but I'm sure you'll find out soon enough. There is also a bar if you like beer that serves only beer in addition to free peanuts. Can't recall their name either at the moment. But yeah, Bloomington is a nice place to live and the best part is everything is pretty close together so you can walk and not worry about DD's or anything.

Depending on where you live, the city is VERY walkable/some bus usage. I think I was about 15 pounds lighter then, when I was walking everywhere.

Campus is beautiful and awesome. Southern Indiana is just a gorgeous place. Pretty redneck if you venture out too far, but beautiful.

Was in Bloomington last week for the first time in about ten years...my wife and I were primed for lunch at Peterson's, but it appears to be gone. We're in mourning.

Nick's is still going strong though.

Thanks for the replies dudes. I'm 23, so I can def barhop. I'll be going to law school out at Maurer next year, and have an apartment just a few blocks from that corner of campus already locked up.

I'll take a bunch of these suggestions. I tried the Thai place in town a few months back, and thought it was ****ing phenomenal. Bloomington seems like a great place to spend the next three years.

Plus I get to be a Colts fan :D

Have they changed their name in Bloomington, too? Sad. Pizza Express didn't need to change the name.

Yeah, it's also a great hippy supporting environment. Bloomingfood's is awesome if you're into the organic/local thing, and there's a ton of great environmentally and social justice type restaurants and stores.
