After watching most of all the summer league games, I have a few thoughts.
Jeff Teague is ready to play a big role in a new offense, but will need some understanding from Larry Drew. He will make mistakes but given consistent PT he'll learn from those mistakes and improve. Can't have a quick hook with him. He can't play like Mike Bibby and by that I mean be a spot up shooter for when Joe tires of dribbling. The whole lineup has to be committed to moving the ball and operating faster for him to succeed.
Jordan Crawford is a good player but he going to face a big challenge this year. The challenge will be barring injury lack of playing time. On a different roster he could a rookie who contributes 10 ppg, but he likely won't get that chance here. He has to keep his head and confidence and be ready to play next year when financial realities will probably thrust him from no PT to serious PT overnight.
Richard Hendrix is backup PF capable, but I think he's under international contract. Alade Aminu has the potential to develop into a good player, but needs more work than he'd likely get here.
Pape Sy is raw and was playing a role that I don't think he was that comfortable with. The injury really set him back. I think he gets a better audition next time around.
I like everything Luke Jackson does, but I just wish it was all at a faster speed. Not sure he can help at NBA game speed.
I think we need to sign another fast young PG for the roster for next year even if he sees little game playing time. The reason I feel we need this is for practice. Call him the scout team PG if you will. Crawford can handle running point, but doesn't have the overwhelming quickness that we need to simulate to make our defense ready for some of the challenges they'll face. Jeremy Lin would be my 1st choice (because he also has great upside), but based on his strong play I can't see Dallas letting him go. There are others out there at the minimum who can fill this role.
The other 2 roster spots clearly need to go to bigs, but given the financial implications we aren't likely to love the ultimate signings. Maybe Earl Barron will get a shot. I think his length is worth the chance. I can't pretend to know the value of Joe Smith in the locker room and maybe it is so important that would merit a vet in the last spot. If not, the thing I see us missing on the floor is a pure energy big. A PF/C type that goes after the ball with reckless abandon. Financially it would have been great to find this guy in Summer League, but none of the bigs stood out to me as having a difference making motor (you tend to recognize these guys when you see them). Maybe Tolliver, Powell, or Amundson (he does this in Phoenix) could provide this role for us, but I'm not sure we'd outbid other teams for their services and until Miami finishes hiring minimum salary spots we aren't likely to get a good minimum contract guy.
Going to donkey punch a leprechaun!
