The Big Three (Daryl Morey is a genius)

Post#1 » by fnasser » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:42 am

It's quite obvious Morey's strategy now is to load up on trade assets. And I think it's a great idea. Since Houston couldn't sign and trade for the star they wanted (Bosh), they can just trade for a few other stars and make their own Hollywood team.

How about this: Brooks, Ariza, Jeffries Expiring and one of the NY picks for Chris Paul. (That is too good of a deal for NO to pass up if Paul shows no sign of commitment.)

Houston is stacked with so many assets that they can use more to trade for another star.

This one isn't too realistic (or it would involve a lot of factors: Melo not signing extension, Paul recruiting Melo and Denver willing to deal to Houston) but a package like Battier (expiring), Hill, Taylor, Andersen, Patterson and the other NY pick for Melo (might fall a little short on the matching contracts but Morey would figure it out).

Now chances are Melo isn't getting traded but that offer of Battier and young prospects and a very high draft pick can get you some disgruntled star during the season.

If those two examples did go down, Houston would be left with a heck of a team and somehow still deep.

Paul / Lowry
Martin / Budinger
Carmelo / Budinger
Scola / Hayes
Yao / Miller

All Houston really lost is a little depth in the swingman position but Chase can back-up either Melo and Martin and those guys are use to heavy minutes anyway. This Big Three of Yao, Melo and Paul covers more of a team's needs than Miami's big three, plus the guys surrounding them, Kevin Martin, Chase Budinger, Chuck Hayes, Brad Miller, Kyle Lowry and Luis Scola trump Miami's role players.

defense isnt great w/ brooks, scola, martin starting and playing most of their position's minutes. to trade both ariza and shane makes our wing and backcourt defense one of the worst in the league.

its not like this team sucks at offense, sure we need another all star, but we cant trade half our defense for that

the thing is if the rockets do trade the assets for a superstar (and they probably will) i want it to be for someone with signability.

melo is going to ny there is no question.

and i think paul is going to end up there as well or in miami with his buddy lebron.

plus how much of an upgrade is it with adding paul in favor of brooks. while giving up more assets on top of it?

We wouldn't have Brooks, we'd have Paul who is a good defender. I know that we would lose defense at the swing position by giving up Battier and Ariza, but Carmelo is not a scrub on defense, and with big guys like Yao and Miller in the post, as well as still having Hayes and Lowry, we still wouldn't be a bad defensive team. And we would be the best offensive team. Adelman could do great things with a team like this.

We are not going to get CP3 nor Granger (Iguodala aint all-star)
Best possibility two we can get are Arenas and Carter (do you want him?)

I love Brooks but Paul is definitely an upgrade, and for a player of his caliber you have to give up alot (luckily we have more than alot).

Yeah getting them to sign would be the hard part. But Paul isn't a free agent until 2012 and I think he would buy into the Rockets plans. He said he wants to contend for Championships; I think he would see that as more important as going to New York. All he would have to do is recruit for them. Like I said, Melo was just an example i don't see it happening but many disgruntled stars appear as the season goes on and their teams lose. Danny Granger?

We might not get him but Chris Paul is definitely attainable with our assets.

hornets do this for sure, they get rid of posey contract, add a perfect cp3 sub. and possible future all-star, an expiring, one or 2 picks, ariza who is worth his contract and would be the best sg/sf of the team and hill who has a decent future also.

brooks is not better than paul but maybe iam even giving too much.

team would look like:

cp3/lowry
martin/budinger/lowry
battier/budinger/posey
scola/hayes
yao/miller

contenders.

I wouldn't do this. What are the chances of Paul re-signing with Houston when he becomes a free agent? I think Morey should have focused on getting another quality big more than anything else. Brad Miller playing extended minutes is never a good thing.

Why can't we get Paul? David west is a FA next year and if he doesn't resign (why would he if he knows paul is leaving), Paul will want out. So NO can get what they can this year or once Paul makes it publicly known that he wants out, NO will get BS offers for him bc they know he wants out. NO is broke and I honestly believe if the right deal came up last year they would have traded Paul (despite his injury).

With that said, we shouldn't give up too much for Paul. Brooks, Ariza, NY pick and Jefferies is wayyy too much. I'd rather just wait for Paul to demand a trade at the end of the year at that point.

We don't need to forget what made us a successful team in the previous seasons. DEFENSE!!! Ariza and Yao can help bring us back to the glory defense days. Let's not give up on him too quickly. I think everyone is just mad bc they were unrealistic and expected more out of Ariza that he can give.

dynamic duo (yao/t-mac) - failed
forgot all that
we got our fab 5 - yao/scola/battier/martin/brooks
