What do we know about Drew's offense?

Post#1 » by parson » Wed Jul 21, 2010 2:05 pm

We've talked about how it reduces the isolation-based play, but I have another thought: by switching to a motion offense, does it downplay the need for a PG? Like the Triangle, does it simply need someone to pass the ball upcourt and start the halfcourt offense?

Specifically, does it mean that JaCrawford and Joe would be able to play long stretches together? I know that Drew has officially told Teague he'll play more but still, if the offense doesn't need a true PG, doesn't that mean Crawford could play starter's minutes?

One more question: when Woodson 1st became our coach, he, also, had a "motion" offense, which was predicated on the open man taking the shot (remember Speedy always being left open to take that shot?) -- how is Drew's offense different?

I'd be grateful to anyone who has knowledge (or thoughts) about Drew's offense.

Well, you never know how the talk translates into the walk, but based on Summer League, if our offense is anything similar, there are a lot more ball reversals and much fewer instances of someone dribbling out the clock, although again, it's Summer League. There's a video on Hawks.com of Drew at practice coaching the SL team - you should check it out (can't link because the NBA website is dumb like that).

If he doesn't ask to switch on defense on every plays, it would have half the job done.
I am waiting too, because I did not even see the summer league games.

Thanks, I guess that also means that Smoove can just drive whenever he wants to. I think I might like that, unless he decides to take jumpers, instead.

And thanks for the heads up on the video.

Summer league offense is nothing like regular season offense. Why are people putting so much stock into summer league? Wall is being called the next great thing and Evan Turner is being called a bust bc of summer league.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

Summer league results, pace, and percentage of fast breaks vs halfcourt sets aren't reflective of the regular season, sure. Ball movement, however, still translates.

The reason I think we are putting some stock into this time is that it was the first glimpse of someone trying to run what Drew wants to run. We're looking at it for an idea of what type of plays will be called. It's not an exact science, but we're looking for clues. Performances won't translate because likely only 2 of the players on that team will be on the roster this winter and their roles are likely to be different because even if they do get PT the people on the floor with them will be different.

I think the defensive rebounding will be improved....but I'm skeptical about the offense. It's been proven that a good defensive coach(Avery,Larry Brown,Skiles, etc)can improve a teams defense w/o a significant change to the roster. That's not the case when it comes to offensive coaches like D'Antoni,Nelson,Eddie Jordan, etc.
