Projected NBA 40 Yard Dash Times (Being Updated slowly...)

Post#1 » by xxRoyalexx » Thu Jul 22, 2010 3:05 am

Decided I'd post this after that thread regarding NBA players in the NFL and whether or not they had the speed.

The Formula:
[acceleration = (2*distance)/(time^2)]
[time = [40/(1/2*acceleration)]^(1/2)]

*These times are not dead on accurate. The rule of thumb is to add about 0.3-0.5 seconds to whatever time I get in these formulas for what'd be their true time. How much I add depends on the weight of the player, something which I just learned recently.

*These are the times of the players from the 2010 Draft Class.

John Wall (6'4", 195lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.14 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 3.97 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.25-4.3 seconds

DeMarcus Cousins (6'11" 292lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.55 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.48 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.95 seconds

Evan Turner (6'7" 214lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.27 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.14 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.45 seconds

Luke Harangody (6'8" 240lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.41 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.31 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.75 seconds

Derrick Caracter (6'10" 280lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.61 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.6 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.95 seconds

Wesley Johnson (6'7", 206lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.14 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 3.97 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.25-4.3 seconds

Gordon Hayward (6'8" 211lbs)
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.22 seconds
Projected 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.08 seconds
True 40 Yard Dash Time: 4.4 seconds
Note: Hayward was an incredible tennis player in HS. Tennis players are fast. The speed is nothing to doubt.

So what do you guys think so far? Does it seem pretty accurate or not? I realize that NBA players are extremely tall but they're very coordinated, and a lot of them are rail thin with hardly any body fat, or built like a tank. So I wouldn't doubt these times...I picked up this formula from a running forum a while back and I dug through my folders to find it.

4.2 is ridiculously fast, even for a specimen like john wall.

It seems too fast. A 4.2 for John Wall would be massive.

It's probably like a 4.28...not a 4.2 on the dot. He's most likely in Chris Johnson territory (fastest player in NFL, runs 4.24.)

I'll edit it to make it more accurate if you want.

Are you sure those times aren't based off 35 yards? lol

Look at the formula. You can see the "40" right in it. As I said this topic has troubled me for a while, I've always wanted to see how say Kobe would fair against Chad Ochocinco in a race. I remember finding this formula on a sprinters forum a while ago and saving it to notepad, but I could never find the 3/4 court sprint of players I was interested in like Kobe so I never used it.

Figured I'd do it now in light of the "NBA players in the NFL" thread, but with recent draft picks because they have all their pre-draft measurements already.

Wesley Johnson isn't running a 4.2..thats Chris Johnson-Champ Bailey-Devin Hester range...none of these guys can run with that bunch.

I know... I think Wall could run in the 4.5-4.6 range. Chris Johnson would leave him in the dust.

Cousins is deceptively quick and skilled. He had a high body fat percentage but that's the way he naturally is. He was also a Football player long before he was a Basketball one, and we know that football players run at freakish speeds, so it's nothing to doubt.

Johnson's should say 4.25-4.3 just like Wall. Thank you for reminding me. :)

A mistake by me. The curve is in fact 0.3-0.5 seconds depending on the weight of the player. I'll correct some of these times shortly.
