OT: J. Kidd - "The Miami Heat Will Hurt The NBA"

Of course, some people don't see the good in the Superfriends getting extra friendly in Florida. They only see the bad things. For instance, Jason Kidd(notes), who thinks these three teaming up is bad for the league. Sports Radio Interviews transcribed a recent ESPN Radio spot featuring Kidd, and he's not quite on board with the concept of more than two stars on any one team.

"Well, I think we would love to spread everybody out. We had 10 or 15 of the top players on separate teams, where guys were coming into town and they could sell tickets. It's not going to be easy for teams to sell tickets in Cleveland or Toronto now because those guys aren't on the team. I think everybody can say Miami will sell out wherever they go all year, but that hurts the NBA in the sense of selling tickets. It's just for them to go West, teams are only going to see them once, and then on the East coast they only go there twice, so it may be disappointing on that aspect but when you talk about just straight basketball it will be interesting and fun to watch."

who cares I hate the Miami Heat. Too bad Charles Oakley still isn't playing. He'd put Lebron James on a stretcher.

The ratings will go through the roof on the national tv games for Miami,, that will make up for ticket sales.

and lol screw J.Kidd. Don't think I forgot about last year. That guy punked us and used us for leverage. Hope Wade and LeBron cram dunks down his throat when they play the Mavs.

The crazy thing is with Curry making $11million Oakley would demand more than the cap would allow us... it's a damn shame that he'd probably still grab some boards and outwork some of the post guys in the league.

That's true that Oakley and even Rodman wouldn't have been soft like some are today. But lets be real Lebron and Wade aren't just nice they are tough too. But I definitly agree that everyone as a whole in the NBA is softer than it used to be. Remember how Chris Childs pieced up Kobe.

Kidd's point is that the Superstar laden Heat will be good for ratings and playoff interest, but will likely hurt the NBA overall by dragging down attendance in other markets. One superstar can help sell out an arena. Clustering three superstars on one team will not sell out that arena three times over, to compensate for the decline of attendance in the other arenas.

Ultimately, players benefit when the entire NBA does well. If NBA revenues suffer, the players are paid less. Last season an NBA player with a $10-million "contract" for 2009-10 had $900,000 (9%) held in escrow by the league, with a large portion of that returned to the NBA because of declines in overall basketball related income.

And it is not just a matter of regular season ticket sales. If the Heat are a powerhouse and sweep playoff series, the NBA generates less income from playoff tickets (can't sell tickets to a game 5, 6 or 7 that is never played) and their TV revenue is reduced. The NBA would prefer total parity, with lots of teams in contention, and every playoff series going seven games.

Having a powerhouse team hurts the NBA.

Stern wouldn't do anything to kill his pockets first off. Second I didn't want Lebron in Miami myself cause I think it's a bit much, but the ratings will be high. Toronto and Cleveland are affected by this. I know it's going to start a trend everyone is saying but when has their been any sport that teams dominated and a few were left off to be wack.

Oh and Old skool why would it hurt the NBA also if there's been teams before that have been stacked. Lakers, Pistons, Bulls, Celtics all been stacked before.

the way i see it the nba does well when games are exciting. games are exciting when they are competitive. games are competitive when each team has talent. each team having talent is good for the league. that's the reason the current CBA is the way it is. bird rights, salary cap rules, all of that exists to ensure every team has an even shot at acquiring and keeping a talented player, thereby bringing more competitive games to the league.

what is better: 4-6 great teams, 10-12 good teams, and 15 or so below average teams

or

3 great teams, 5 good teams, and 20 below average teams

the latter would produce more blowouts and unentertaining games.
