That $11 mil player option at the end... wow, just wow. RJeff's agent must have incriminating pictures of Tim Duncan and David Robinson with roses and mums. :o

If you judge the signing and the opt out seperately, then ofcourse the Spurs now look stupid again. Forget 4 year 40 mil, the Spurs could give him 5 year 35 mil and who's gonna even match that offer?

Spurs get below the tax, gives us flexibility to sign Splitter, and essentially give Jefferson a 3 year 25 mil extension.

Jefferson gets to test the market, and basically gets an extension that is worth above the MLE.

It's a win-win deal.

I wouldn't say its a win for us. 4 years 38 million is way too much for RJ, there was literally no intrest in RJ from other teams. We overpaid for a declining scorer who relies too heavily on his athleticism and in couple years this deal is gonna look really bad.

This is an awesome deal for the Spurs. No way Jefferson is opting out w/out this deal on the table. And if 23 million is what Jefferson wouldv'e cost the Spurs with the luxury tax then they are essentially signing Jefferson to a 15.8M extension for 3 years. Jefferson is easily worth that!

It's not so much about what RJ would of cost us next year, it's about the burden his contract is going to become over the next 4 years. The guy doesn't have more than two good seasons left in him, he's a bad fit to start with and giving a player like that basically an average salary of 10 million over the next 4 years is just stupid. He's going to cost us more grief in the long term than what his cap hit would have been next year.

No secret that RC and Pop are one. This move isn't as bad as the average fan would think.

Spurs will never fire Pop. He'll retire when Duncan does.

Sure, Jefferson was overpaid but he declined a $15+M option that would keep Spurs way over the luxury tax.

Win-win deal i guess.

Win for RJ, Lose for Spurs.
Instead of having nightmare for 1 more year, the Spurs basically
have extended the nightmare for 4 more years.

RJ allowed us to have flexibility to sign Splitter. If he didn't opt out, we might not keep Splitter and end up having to trade him like we trade Scola. I certainly don't mind this deal. I think most of us knew this was pre-arranged. It's not like this doesn't help the Spurs at all. RJ had to be extremely stupid to opt out and help the Spurs out like that without having an offer on the table to accept.
