I think the complaint about the headline is legit. Not that it should say 'Ex-Mav', but it's been so long the headline was obviously worded that way to garner attention because your average sports fan has no idea who Shawne Williams is.

Which is the purpose of a headline.

If the average sports fan is going to recognize Shawne Williams, it is far and away most likely that they'll recognize him as the guy who was drafted by the Pacers that had a fugitive from a murder warrant arrested in his house when he was a Pacer.

Also, it is the easiest way to make sure that the average NBA fan can differentiate between Sean/Shawne Williams. One is the pot smoker from Boston College who played for the Nets. The other is the dip **** from Memphis who played for the Pacers.

The Pacers had a number of dip **** who played for them this past decade, and those dip **** reached the pinnacle of their dip **** behavior as Pacers.

Ron Artest just won a ring, but will forever known as the player who started a huge brawl as a Pacer. Stephen Jackson won a ring in San Antonio, and has played in the playoffs for two different teams since leaving the Pacers, but he will also always be known by a wider audience for the dumbass **** he did as a Pacer.

Those two guys at least have other things that they've done outside of the Pacers, but Shawne Williams has done nothing that a wide audience would know besides the boneheaded crap he did with the Pacers.

Referring to Williams as "Ex-Pacer" was not only appropriate, but it was far and away the most effective wording if you wanted the widest number of readers to understand who it was.

If the headline had said "Pacer Shawne Williams," then there would be cause for complaint.
