What should we do now?

Post#1 » by michaellam_1986 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:30 am

We have enough cap space but at the end we are stuck with all those moderiate talents in Outlaw/Farmer/Petro/Morrow. Honestly, I dont think we can make the playoff. What should we do now?

Play the season and develop our guys. The team is young, let them build chemistry.

Personally, I hate all those signings. Are there anyone love those players?

Farmar - Got paid market value. Team needed a backup point guard. I'm fine with this signing.
Petro - Got paid market value. Team needed a backup center. I'm fine with this signing.
Morrow - Underpaid. Not sure how anyone can NOT be fine with this signing.
Outlaw - Overpaid. The only signing I'm still a bit skeptical of. Has his uses though...

i agree w/ u on the farmar signing, morrow signing but not the petro signing and obviously i agree w/ u on outlaw signing. We did need a backup center and petro would fulfill the job, however petro out of all 4 of these signings was the most overpaid. he is not deserving of his contract because he is slightly better than D. Diop who didnt recieve and still hasnt recieved wat he is recieving from the nets

If you look at his career averages and what other backup centers are getting paid, Petro is being paid a reasonable amount.

I do agree that he has the greatest likelihood amongst those 3 players of falling into the bad contract category though...

With all those signings, when would the Nets be able to back into playoff?

Barring any Big-Time trades, I'd say it depends on how quickly Favors develops. I think we can contend for the 8th seed if he's decent. If he becomes as good as we hope, and Brook continues to develop, we can be a top 4 seed team in a couple years (this assumes Boston's falloff).

We should trade for Sasha. Vujacic is making $5.4M and LA is over the tax. So trading him saves $10.9M, a late 1st is worth around $3M, they can throw in another $3M in cash (LA fans think they would) and still save close to $5M.

Nets will have to sacrifice a peace of that magical (and useless) fairy dust you call cap, but they can use that $3M (or a little more) to buy Sasha out and have a 1st rounder pretty much for free, worst case they just cut him, even getting a 1st for $2.5 exactly is a good deal. Thats what smart GMs do. If Pritchard had a job i'm sure he would jump on this deal.

This has nothing to do with Pritchard, i'm talking about getting a 1st round pick for practically nothing.

"If Pritchard had a job i'm sure he would jump on this deal."

That's to quote you.

But anyway, I wouldn't do that move, it's a late-1st for goodness sake, most of these guys just end up as a reliable starter/off the bench kind of players, I would rather spend that on proven veterans in the free agency, if that's the type of players you're looking for. Literally the best place to draft a player is in the lottery, because these guys tend to be high-upside guys.

And it's not for nothing, we're wasting cap obviously.

If cap space was so useless, why did the Miami Heat empty their roster before July 1?

How can you in your right mind say Morrow is a bad signing?

Its for nothing because we are wasting cap space by NOT trading.

There is nothing left in free agency bud, the Nets have missed the boat.

The Miami Heat question was just an example. Teams create cap space for the future so we're not wasting cap space. There are no trade deals that we can make right now but that does not mean that we can't remain idle for a bit and wait for a deal to present itself.

Plus, why would the Nets want to add another wing player now?

Look I'm ok adding salary for a 1st round pick and giving back a TPE, but trading for Sasha is flat out (Please Use More Appropriate Word). That is completely wasting cap space and roster space. Every wing player, including Quinton Ross is better than Sasha. We have our shooter off the bench (Morrow...and Ross actually isn't a bad shooter) so it's pointless just for a #30 1st round pick. Whipty freakin do!

Again, I'm fine taking on an expiring contract to help a team over the cap if we get a player who plays a position that we need another body in. If a team over the tax came calling with an ok PF that is an upgrade from Humphries but wouldn't impeded Derrick's development, I most certainly will strongly consider the deal, but we're talking about Sasha dude. Seriously?

Making this trade doesn't effect our future cap in the least. Just like pretty much every other trade i was for, this is a expiring contract. And it still leaves us with 9M in cap to do similar thing at the deadline.

As for the underlines part....how am i not making this clear enough?
