Odd, as Thon, Angel Gomez, Luiz Benitez and Omar Cotto are the only Puerto Ricans that we drafted this year, and by virtue of its status as an American protectorate, all Puerto Rican kiddies go through the draft rather than international free agency.

This might be a stretch...but maybe he was Dominican: (from BA international prospects listing)

29. CHRISTOPHER TAMAREZ, SS

One of the better athletes in Latin America is Tamarez, who plays in the Dominican Prospect League. He hit well in the league but some scouts say he stands out more for his tools and projectable, wiry body. Tamarez, 16, runs well and has a solid-average arm, and while he's still cleaning up his defense he has a chance to remain at shortstop. He also has potential at the plate and has the size to project for average power as he fills out.

Even better if it's this guy....a broken Eskarlin may sound like Christopher. (anybody know if they guy has been signed----he's listed 5th!)

5, ESKARLIN VAZQUEZ, RF

Vazquez, who is from Puerto Plata, is represented by Rob Plummer and trains with Moreno Tejada, the same pair that worked with Twins $3.15 million shortstop Miguel Sano last year. Vazquez has a long, projectable body and above-average raw power. He generates his power with a natural swing with easy whip that helps him generate loft. He isn't a great runner and will have to play in an outfield corner, but his arm is at least a plus tool and will allow him to play right field. It's not clear where Vazquez will sign, but he has drawn strong interest from a few teams, including the Giants.

If it's a Puerto Rican, it could be Thon but I think more likely it's Cotto. If it's a Dominican and no-one seems sure, then Tamarez is the best bet. As it is now Wednesday, should find out soon.

He appears to be a Red Sox fan: http://www.myspace.com/frias_12

His stats aren't exactly overwhelming...21 years old, .326 average and .133 ISO, some speed from the looks but not very choosy (.667 SB% isn't very good). Meh.

I laughed when I read your post and your thread title, because it reminded me of one of the best commercials ever made starring Roberto Alomar and his best one-liner ever (at 0:26 seconds):

I wonder if Robbie was supposed to announce this?

I loved the exchange between him & Buck.

Buck: "Is this signing official"
Robbie: "Oh yeah, sure. I tink so."
