And yeah, I'm having a major problem understanding how the Knicks and Nuggets are in the picture. If he was undrafted, it would be one thing. But how do we not retain his rights?

True. NY's press is sad and hilarious. As where New Yorkers are just hilarious.
I sure hope we get DC.

The MLB has been around since what, the 1870s? Professional Basketball since 1940s? So MLB has been around twice as long as the NBA. The Yankees have 27 banners, the Lakers 17. Now double 17 and what do you get? 34.

/Edit - The Yanks started in 1901, the Lakers in 1947 (although neither started with there current city). I'd bet we can win more than 10 rings in the next 46 years.

Also, the Yankees play in a league with no salary cap and a billionaire ownership - with a 200 million payroll they should always win.

/End baseball talk.

You have his draft rights but do you have the roster spot?

We've only got 11 players under contract.

Caracter is basically gonna be the 11th or 12th man on the team. He probably will play as much as as Powell played last season.

I looked up the question online:

Two options -

If LA doesn't sign him, they retain his rights only until the next draft if he does NOT play professionally anywhere (DLeague, Euro, Israel, etc). So if he works at 24hr Fitness for a year and balls at the local YMCA he can re-enter next yrs draft, LA loses his rights. Highly Unlikely.

Or

If LA doesn't sign him, they retain his rights if he plays professionally anywhere non-NBA. They retain his rights for 1 year AFTER whatever contract he signs ENDS. Say he signs in Spain, ala Elonu, and plays next season there until May 2011. LA retains his right for another year until 2012. Says he signs a multi-year over there, LA still has his rights until 1 year after that deal ends, ala Clippers and Sofo. He's not a free agent (unless LA renounces his rights). Insert Jesse Jackson quote here.

The Lakers should let him and Ebanks go to Europe. Ebanks especially will benefit from a league where shooting is much more of a necessity than the NBA. Once he gets a 35%+ jumpshot he can be a major bench contributor for the Lakers.

No reason why they wouldn't sign Caracter unless he has a poor vet camp. Gasol and Bynum both missed 17 games last year; without him they'd have a thin front court.

staff were obviously fairly impressed with caracter at VSL, but he was clowning on d-league talent a lot of the time

now we just want to see if he can bring that fire to summer training camp and see what he can do against championship quality bigs
