Dallas fan trying to guage Indy fan's opinion

I think Dallas and Indy can be good trade partners here. There is a history with the Daniels/Croshere, the Anthony Johnson and the Shawne Williams/Jones+2nds. So I think the two front offices have a good standing relationship.

From the article on the Pacer Board regarding PGs, the arthur has Jose Juan Barea as a #2 option behind Kirk Hinrich.

Barea is an ideal option for the Pacers because they know what he can do (score, run) and his contract expires after the 10-11 season. Dallas has a few options at point guard behind starter Jason Kidd: Rodrigue Beaubois (who they love more than any team in the league) and super-sub Jason Terry.
Still, Barea is a significant part of what the Mavericks do having averaged close to 20 minutes per game last season. Beaubois is expected to see an increase in minutes though, and the Pacers have a few pieces that are attractive to a team like the Mavs that like to add pieces (no matter the cost) all the time. The problem there is Barea’s $1.8 million contract, meaning Indiana might have to take on someone like DeShawn Stevenson just to get the point guard.

It is my opinion that one of Jose Juan Barea or Jason Terry needs to go because of minutes available after Kidd, Butler, Beaubois and Jones take up most of the 1 and 2 guard minutes. And we need to get a backup for Dirk Nowitzki.


For salary purposes, I can only come up with 2 trades and neither have anything to do with Stevenson:

One: Something based around Jason Terry for Troy Murphy.
Two: Something based around Barea for Hansbrough

Both of those Dallas would have to sweeten the pot. Barea/Hansbrough because of potential and Terry/Murphy because of Terry’s 2nd year. Obviously, the rights to Nick Calathes would be included as he was a PG projected to in the late 1st round last year but fell to the 2nd because he already had a contract to play over-seas. I think he has the potential to be anywhere from Udrih to Hinrich, but that is still just potential. And cash can be added.

My problem is that I don’t know how attached to those two you guys are and I don’t know what you would expect in return. Can I get you opinions on this please?

I wouldn't think the Pacers would do the deal for Jason Terry simply because he's a 2-guard for the most part and what we're looking for right now is a true PG. I don't see us involving Hansbrough in any trades until we know if he's healthy or not, likewise no other team is going to trade for him until he proves he's healthy.

I wouldn't mind having Barea as a backup PG, but we still need to find ourselves a quality starting PG first.

Barea for Hansbrough ain't likely at all. Larry Bird ain't tradin Hansbrough a year after he drafted him in the lottery for Barea and fillers. His house would get robbed 24-7.

I'd have to think the front office wouldn't consider anything around Hansbrough right now. They'd likely offer you up Solo Jones, and probably let you walk away from it. Barea, as a 2nd/3rd PG simply isn't worth a former lotto pick that we're hoping heals up.


And just no to Terry.


BTW, Calathes and Ajinca simply aren't really incentive. Calathes wasn't really a great prospect coming out of that draft and was projected as a "possible" late 1st round pick, even before signing overseas. The fact that he signed before the draft, I think, was indicative of the fact that he knew he was going in the 2nd round, if at all.

I'd take Terry as a short term fix. he's a better shooter than a passer but that fits what O'B wants to do. I see his age as a plus too as he wouldn't block the long term development of younger players.

if Dallas had a shot at CP3, I'd be willing to facilitate it by taking Terry and moving an expiring contract. of course, I'd rather move TJ than Murphy but maybe that could happen if Dallas were motivated enough in a 3 way deal.

Agree. Terry is not a bad choice, since his contract is not too long. 9.87M in 2010-11 and 10.66M(5M guaranteed) in 2011-12.

Jet started for us the year we went to the Finals. He may not be a good facilitator but he can pass the ball and kill teams on the pick and roll.

We want him gone because we're sick and tired of having an undersized SG eating up a ton of minutes and stunting the development of Beaubois and Marion rotting on the bench.

I wanted to get Terry from Atlanta when we got S-Jax. But that was 5 years ago. With the dxn we're headed in now, I don't think he'd be great for the future of this team.

Jet is a near perfect fit for Obie's offense: Can hit the 3, can drive-and-kick, and is a scorer first. But I'm almost 100% sure he wouldn't sign off on a trade from warm, perennial 50-win, playoff-contending Dallas for cold, struggling, up-and-coming Indiana. He'd be a good mentor for AJ when he gets healthy, and could be a great lockerroom vet for a mostly young, inexperienced squad, if he wanted to be. But I think he's trying to win a title now, and while he probably doesn't have a no-trade, he'd most likely be disgruntled, unless we somehow get off to a fast start and show some true promise.

Oh yeah, and no on Tyler trade.

I'd disagree. Granger was recenlty quoted as saying "if" Tyler comes back. He's a big mystery right now.

I don't think you can depend on Foster playing major minutes at this point in his career. He's great for some hustle off the bench, but I think his value is more as a veteran presence now.

And I'd really rather not play Danny major minutes at the 4. I guess against the Rashard Lewis' or other non-banging 4s you could get away with it, but I don't want that extra toll on his body, especially after the World's.

All that said, I'd trade Murphy in a second. I want McRoberts to get more time and even Rolle. To me, there's just no use in playing these expirings this year. Everyone and their grandmother knows that they won't be back so use the minutes to really develop these young guys. If you're of the mentality that "teams needs to see (insert expiring) play in order to make a trade", no they don't. Every GM in the league knows what these guys can and can't do by now. Their value is more as an expiring than a real piece to add to a roster.
