Re: Official FIBA World Championship Thread (and long preview)
OK, so I just got done watching the spain canada game on spanish tv...
Spain kicked ass as expected, but Im not sure if this is the team canada will field for the tournament, seeing as though they are missing Anthony and English. I thought Matt Bonner was going to play for them too. This canadian team barely scraped by Ivory Coast yesterday, and theyre terrible. Spain played their starters for the first 6 minutes of each half and sat them after that, so their bench was on display today.
Final score 84-38. Damn.
Im only going to do my impressions on the spain team, seeing as though they are the co-favorites with the US.
Stars-
Marc Gasol-My sleeper pick for tournament MVP, he came to play today, probably with the intentions of embarrassing the canadian bigs. he collected quite a few defensive stops, at least 2 or 3 blocks. On offense he was active and drawing fouls, but his hook shots werent dropping. also was terrrrible on free throws, shot at least under 50% on those 0-4 from what i remember. on a positive note, he was active in transition, sometimes carrying the ball up the court until he found calderon or navarro for the outlet pass. He played very quickly, so dont expect him to slow down spain's run and gun offense.
Ricky Rubio-his jumper wasnt falling today it seemed, but he didnt take that many. other than that, he did a great job of creating passing lanes out of nothing. he even hit an and-1 runner falling into the baseline that got the crowd on its feet
Rudy Fernandez-made a few threes, but i dont think he shot that well. then again none of the star players did.
Navarro-phoned it in for this game, just attempted open threes, and missed a lot of them.
Calderon-suprised me with his quickness, got some assists and a lay up or two off of isolations
Veterans-
Reyes-may have led the team in scoring, not sure. he did everything that the team needs him to do, but he didnt stand out.
Garbajosa-surprisingly active on defense, especially on the pick and roll. hit some open jumpers. i was very impressed. im not sure if hes still NBA talent level, but hes definitely not washed up.
Mumbru-Didnt do too much, but hes the ballsiest wing on the team, loves to dribble and test the defender 1 on 1.
New Faces-
Suarez-Cant create his own shot, but he knows where to be at the right time, which is great when you have Calderon and Rubio as the pgs
Fran Vazquez-Good in the post, a beast on defense, good passing. Great all around performance, you could tell he didnt mind showing off against lesser tallent. Had a good alley oop from Rubio, which supports my theory that theyll be have a good chemistry going after a season of playing together at barça.
San Emeterio-He messed up every time he touched the ball. There were numerous times where the guards on the 2nd unit threw errant lob passes. a good share of those were from him. I also saw either him or Suarez get badly burned on a backdoor cut, but of course the canadian player missed the layup.
Victor Claver-Fast and athletic, the 2nd unit guards were looking to throw lobs to him in the post but they suck at passing. I want to see him play with better surrounding talent.
Apparently theres a guy named Martinez on the team, but i guess hes invisible or something.
Not a whole lot to be drawn from this game, other than that spain is going to run the ball a lot and that they like to pressure the ball. Itll be much more interesting to see how this team performs against slovenia and lithuania, then of course, the US and Argentina.

It´s soon to be released the final cut for Brazil´s roster. My bet is PG Fulvio, C Murilo da Rosa (MVP of the south american tournment) and former BYU SF Jonathan Tavernari will make the team.

Who would've guessed the basketball game would turn out more lopsided than the bullfight?

Just a heads up; that wasn't Canada's senior team, it was a developmental squad, maybe 2 of those players will make the sr team in Turkey.

Rose had the most impressive performance among PG's in the scrimmage game, and Coach K. said he's actually impressed with Rose's defense. And what character issues do u speak of? Or are you just being a troll?
One game, look at the entire season and know that Rose isn't a winner which is why guys like Salmons plays much better when he went to play for a PG with winning intangibles like Jennings.
Marbury took a dump on spain but it was him and guys like him that led to their downfall in '04. Rose has proven he can only play a selfish style of basketball that won't help out the US. Why do you think Kidd was the starting PG in '08 even though Paul and Deron were miles better on paper?
And your oblivious to Rose's character issues? Are you just jumping on the bandwagon again or are you really clueless.

This is not about a Rose bandwagon. But calling Rose selfish or stating he has character issues is like stating that Oakley was soft.
Most journalist's would say that Rose is one of the nicest most humble players in the league. Much like a Tim Duncan.
As for selfish, let me guess you are judging this by his 6 apg and not by actually watching him play. If you watched the Bulls last year, you would recognize that Vinny D ran a hockey offense. Rose would pass the ball immediately coming up the floor to Kirk or the Center position. Then the player who had the ball would pass the ball to the scorer for the assist. If Rose was judged by Hockey assists, he would be ranked as one of the top passers in the league. Chauncey Billups played the same way in his Detroit days.
Please D-31, I don't know what you hatred for Rose is about, but please watch Rose before judging him as the next Marbury.

Correction: Rubio vs Canada's developmental squad; maybe 1 or 2 of these guys will play ior Canada's senior squad in Turkey and Rubio didn't face off against them. This was in no way Canada's team.

Are Bulls fans really oblivious o Rose's character issues? and have the gall to compare him to Tim Duncan?
I must have missed the part where Duncan cheated on his SATs and lied about it, must have missed Duncan throwing up gang signs in a hazy room. Missed Duncan getting his record stripped from cheating. Must have missed Duncan driving 40 miles over the speed limit putting peoples lives in danger. Must have missed Duncan "accidentally cutting himself with a knife".
Just because Rose isn't good in front of the cameras doesn't make him humble or nice. As shown when he gets around his thug friends and shows his gang envy.
Rose plays selfish style of basketball that doesn't fit with the US teams goals. They already have enough scoring the need leadership, defense, and someone with a high bbiq to run the point. 3 things Rose lacks. It's like AI when he was playing unselfishly, he wasn't forcing a whole lot or dribbling out the shot clock. but he was pretty much useless if he didn't have the ball in his hands.
That's why Rose doesn't belong on the team that goes to the WC.

Scoring is what they lack most. Only Rose and Durant can really create their own shots. Rose is so important just for scoring.

I refuse to believe you are this big of a square. Absolutely refuse to believe it. Are there others like you?
Bagging on a 19 year old kid who did what he had to in order to get his money. I mean, he wasn't going to be a rocket scientist if he studied hard. I'm fairly certain he was always going to make more money playing basketball. This goes for all players, not just Rose - Go get your money, spend it wisely, retire early. Blame the NBA for putting that ridiculous "one year of college" rule in place (fwiw, I believe the intentions of the rule are good, but it's just a silly silly rule)
As for the rest of your post, you are just biased. Real talk.
Keith Bogans does his job. Boo Hoo. You want him to quit?

Defense and team play is more important than creating your own shot. Derrick Rose does neither and in the situations where you really do want a someone to create their own shot, a close basketball going against a great defense Rose shouldn't be on the court. He can't knock down threes, his free throw shooting is terrible, his decision making is poor, he won't play defense, and he chokes.

Glad you admit what Rose is, a foolish kid who shouldn't be on the team. I'm a big LeBron supporter and he was miles better than Rose in '04 but they should have looked for someone else because he didn't fit the team. Same with Rose here.
What smart people do is work with what they have to deal with. I am against the 1 year college rule, but it was implemented and Rose knew about it, he chose to slack off and that proves he is of low character.
Real talk.
