It would still be LBJ but the next 7 years ( 03 - 10 ) would be handled differently.

I would have drafted LeBron and then let the GM actually run the franchise and not LeBron.

If it looked like things were going to turn out the same way then I would have traded LeBron at his maximum value.

Was LeBron behind trading a first rounder for Jiri Welsch?

Drafting Luke Jackson?

Turning down J.J. Hickson for Amare?

A terrible trade for sure. We all know Paxson was a terrible GM. We also all know that Gilbert had Paxson replaced when he bought the team. Who knows though if LeBron was behind it or not. Knowing how behind every other move he was later in his career its hard to say for sure.

Drafting Luke Jackson?

Luke was a bust, but that 04 draft was terrible too. Al Jefferson was taken 5 picks later, Josh Smith 7, and Jameer Nelson 10. Sure we missed on those three guys but so did tons of other teams. Picking any of those three would have been considered a huge reach at the time.

Turning down J.J. Hickson for Amare?
As has been pointed out, that simply didnt happen. The Suns turned it down after we offered Hickson.

If it really needs to be discussed we can go into all of the moves that it is documented that LeBron was behind. Im not sure you really want to argue that LeBron didnt shape the team the way it was. It was our owners fault that we let LBJ run the team's future into the ground.

It would've been nice to have Lebron instead of Darko. That team is too strong.

I agree about the idiotic nature of this thread. The only team that missed in what is probably the second best draft ever was detroit. But I do want to address the Jiri Welsch deal and point out that for the last 7 years the Cavs have been too loose with their draft picks. In basketball a draft picks are extremely valuable for talent like Oklahoma City, Hawks or tradebait like Celtics. Minnesota stayed mediocre because of draftpicks. Both Paxson and Ferry were to quick to say well since our pick is late we will trade it for a perceived need. Even now the team is making deals with a team that won over 60 games two years in a row. Play with the team now and draft well that is the key. Kentucky has another stud point guard. Doc Rivers son Austin is the truth! Lakers kept Bynum and look at them now. Draft well with the superstar and the team will move up. I agree that Lebron's uncertainty was the key to bonehead deals such as Jamison and numerous undersized guards that are made to play with him. But the team has to make decisions with a coach and GM that says this is how it is going to be. I can guarantee you that Pat Riley won't have players making trades.

I'm almost positive that the only first rounder that Ferry ever traded was in 2010. It was Paxson that was actually loose with the trading of picks. And most of those actually happened before LeBron was drafted.

My question is what first rounder has either Ferry or Paxson kept and even fit into the team. JJ will go down as a great pick because he is the type of piece that will help a good team and should have played more in the Boston series. But just because LeBron has screwed the Cavs does not take away from the amazing accomplishments this team made inspite of bad drafting. By the way no pick 2005, 2007 and 2010. In addition the 2nd round was barren for the cavs as well, In the meantime the Lakers this year got Ebanks and Carreker in the second round. 2007 sessions who we just traded for was late second round. By the way there is an article that the cavs are stockpiling picks. It is the way for longterm stability!

Well B Mac then you are saying that the team that Lebron put together had back to back 60 win seasons and a finals appearance in 2007. Boy maybe he should be the GM. No what I am saying is the team needed to be less on trades and more on development. In comparing Cleveland to Chicago, Jerry Krause was the villian at all times but allowed the team put together in 1987 to stay together and add pieces from the draft mainly and mature to three time champions. There was not a trading and signing people for specific teams or players. One thing Lebron, Mo, Hickson, Z or Shaq, Varejoe, West and Parker would beat most teams in the NBA. So the problem was developing a trust in players early in the year and letting them know you are the man. I thought that is what happened on Christmas Day and Z and Shaq played together and negated the Lakers big 2. I thought when JJ blocked Dwight Howard off the glass and played him downlow while Moon and LeBron chased the shooters the team showed development. The Jamison trade lost Z for a month and Shaq got hurt which he always does and Brown stubbornly put Jamison in the starting lineup. Bad matchup with the Celtics. The team the celtics has trouble with is the hawks and their length and quickness well with Lebron's versatility and Moon and Hickson the Cavs could have had a team of 6'8" to 6'10" switching and running the Celtics in the ground. But the team has got to trust the players.

If the GM was a genius like Nostradamus and could see the future he'd still pick LeBron. I mean, with LeBron Cavs had 5-6 years that they were a solid team and could win it all.

Draft lebron and trade him few years later. I mean its a trade no free agency, he doesn't have to have a say in it in the front office doesn't want it.
