Gerald Green Signs in Russia - what a waste
I see that Gerald Green has signed to play in Russia after another failed attempt to get back into the NBA. This is just another tragic case of a kid with endless physical tools, but an apparent lack of the mental toughness and discipline that it takes to make it to and stay in the NBA.
I hate to admit this, but Gerald Green was the one player from the KG deal that I was most excited about. I knew Big Al was the best player in the deal, but Gerald Green had the athleticism to become something special. After about 4 games into the season it became obvious that kid didn't enjoy being coached and was simply looking for a chance to put a highlight on ESPN. After he left MN, I kept hoping the kid would mature and work on his game and make something of his skills, but here he goes - off to Russia.
I look at stories like Gerald Green and the recent story on Rashad McCants and it makes me so angry to see such a waste of talent. How can someone who has the physical skills to be so good and to make so much money not work a hard as possible to get there? And how can you be so indifferent towards success to not listen to coaches and do what needs to get done?
Before I get 20 replies about how many times this has happened in various sports, I will state in advance that no matter how often this occurs I will never understand it.
Would any of this be improved if the NBA changed their draft rules relating to age? Or would this simply delay the inevitable?

Brain power is every bit as much "talent" as muscle power. Green is just dumb as a box of rocks and so on the balance isn't as talented as many think.
I also feel the same way about Beasley.

I don't think you will get 20 replies on a post that starts with 'Gerald Green' in the title

Re: Gerald Green Signs in Russia - what a waste
Well if the NBA would have continued to let HS players join the league, we would be seeing many more Gerald Greens & Kwame Browns. As far as a waste of talent, I question if he really had the talent to begin with. Maybe he was always mediocre but just dominated in HS because of his size & athleticism. I mean he had that one solid season before we got him, but the Celtics were garbage to begin with and Paul Pierce only played 47 games so we has getting playing time. Didn't seem like he was disciplined on that team and it was just full of young kids that could do whatever they wanted because they were tanking, Pierce was getting fat and ready to leave, and they were going to build through the draft (before Ray Allen trade).

Agreed. If you are looking for 20 replies, try the other board.

well getting 20 replies shouldn't be an issue at all. however, I highly doubt they'd be on topic

Tragic? How much money is he making in Russia? Probably more money than anyone on this forum makes. And I'd much rather be in Russia with a bunch of russian dames than in Minnesota with a bunch of fat chicks with bad dye jobs that eat Famous Daves everyday.

I think it is actually very easy to understand. As the dark Lord Baldric said, physical athletic ability is only part of the equation of being a good or great professional athlete. And, imo, it is an over-rated part of the equation. The game at this level is much more mental than it is physical.

It would be interesting to see if this coaching staff could develop his game...

Green can dunk. Sometimes he can hit a 3, but he's so stupid, and he can't dribble the ball.

It's funny that I didn't realize that he had a missing finger until just recently.
