WT: Delgado Has Received Minor-League Offers

Carlos Delgado has received two minor-league offers, according to agent David Sloane, who said he'll talk with more teams this week.

Delgado, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right hip, has not played since May 10, 2009.

The White Sox, Rays, Tigers and Giants are among the teams that could be seeking additional offensive help.

Just cuz he's Delgado I would offer him a Minor League deal.

If we had gotten rid of Overbay, I would have been fine with brining in Delgado for a try down the stretch.

I like it when guys finish their careers where they started them.

Delgado is one of my all time fave Jays and I would love for him to get back to the league and get a shot at 500 HRs. People thought he was washed up when he got to the Mets and he ended up having one of his best seasons that one year, so I think he is still capable of hitting the ball well at this point.

He will most likely join an AL team as a DH. There were some rumblings from the Yankees earlier in the year about bringing him on because of their situation at the DH Spot.

I'll pass. No real point in acquiring him. Plus Im still bitter that he refused to waive his no trade clause to join a contender late in the season way back.

Just so we're clear here:

You are bitter because Delgado thought staying in Toronto was more important than making the post season with a division rival?

I could see him going to the Tigers or like the Angels. Both need a DH/1B to the postseason stretch.

Wow, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't in Toronto.

Hope we can do what Boston did with Garciaparra when he does retire.

Delgado defines class in every way possible and I would love to have him back with the Jays.

I've thought of it a bit more overnight. Now that I think of it, it would be a shame if he signed anywhere else.

This would be a classy move by the franchise to bring back one of it's all time greats.

I believe he was in the last yr of his big contract with the Jays. He turned down a trade to the Dodgers ( for the last 2 months). He then signed another big contract with the Marlins (who then trade him to the Mets). Point is, he was not going to re-sign with the Jays. We could have gotten something back for him yet he turned it down to play the string out instead of battling for a shot at the World Series.

Delgado would have stayed in Toronto had the team actually made an offer near market value. But they didn't and he moved on.

Not sure why that's a reason to not like the guy.

You are completely out to lunch on this one.

JP offered him an insulting contract that noone as good as Delgado would sign. I think it was less than $10M per season. He only ended up signing for around $12-13M which was easily market value for a guy as good as he was. If anything it was less than market value. This was the point when I started questioning JP's ability as a GM. I think Overbay is ok and all but who'se going to say that he is worth even close to what Delgado was in his prime (JP offered them about the same amount per season within 2-3 yrs)? Delgado didn't waive his no-trade clause because he wanted to stay. I'm not going to scour for 6 year old newspaper clippings but I'm pretty sure he had indicated this in the press.

JP's main problem as a GM was that once he fell in love with a player (e.g., Overbay, Lilly, Mench, Wilkerson, Barajas, etc.) it wouldn't matter how low they sank later on in their careers (e.g., Mench & Wilkerson), he still had to get him.

Jays fans have no reason not to like Delgado...he did everything right when he was here. Why do you think he got such a long standing ovation his first game back?

I remember it differently. Jays couldnt afford him. There was ZERO chance that he was returning. In fact his previous contract hindered the Jays for many years. With regards to JP, it was irrelevant. You guys seems to forget what JP was ordered to do re: payroll. Remember how low it was supposed to be in JP's early years. That will give you a clue. I stand by my statement. We are here to build a winner, not cater to someone chasing some statisicial goal. Too many people here want to blame everything but the players sometimes.

IIRC, Green was also due for a big pay day - Jays couldn't afford both and had to choose.

I dunno I remember something along the lines of us just not offering him anything and deciding to let him walk cuz we didn't want him back. As for Green, didn't he ask for a trade to LA to be home?

Of course there was zero chance he was returning. But that wasn't because he wanted to leave Toronto, it was because the Jays couldn't (or chose not to) afford him.

Again, not sure how or why that's a reason to be bitter about his departure.

Yes...in 1999. Not sure what he has to do with anything.

As I recall, it was chose not too. I seem to remember it being the same offseason or the beginning of the next season where they announced the big three year payroll jump for 2006-2008...

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
